Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

The past 90 days (not in any particular order):

Replaced my Avenir SRS Road seat with a Selle Anatomica Titanico X (major improvement!).
Replaced my Armadillo tires with Gatorskins (another major improvement).
Bought a new riding jersey and Pearl Izumi bibs.
Upgraded my 10 year old Cannondale seat pack to a Timbuk2 Seat Pack XT (yeah, yeah... I know it's larger than what most of you guys use. Sue me. ).
Upgraded my pedals from Shimano PD-M502's to 105's.
Upgraded shoes from some 8yr old Shimano SPD compatible pedals to Specialized SPD-SL shoes (https://www.specialized.com/us/en/ftr...hoes/comp-road)
Replaced my not even one year old KMC chain with a Shimano 105 chain (it was already stretched even though it was billed as being "stretch proof").

Later on this week:

Replacing the bottom bracket (current one is about 8 years old now and is starting to give me some trouble).
Replacing the garbage Tektro calipers my bike came with with Shimano 105's + Salmon Kool Stop pads.

In the past calendar year I've done enough repairing/upgrading of my bike that the only original parts that'll be on it by the end of this week are the frame, crankset, rear derailleur, seat post, forks, and the handlebars/handlebar stem.

Bikes: '13 Trek Madone 5.2 '14 Giant Thrive - (wife's)

Ok...first post. Been here for weeks and have learned a lot. Really wanted to make good decisions on a pair of bikes for the wife and I as we return to cycling after many years. Started with what we felt was a reasonable budget for LBS sourced fitness recreation, ($600. or so, per), and eventually made it to purpose specific carbons prior to pulling the trigger. I feel very happy with what we bought and hope we got the fittings right since it will be mid-October before we can take delivery. The bikes we bought are as follows: I got a '13 5.2 Madone in the lime/white; and the better half fell in love with the new for '14, Giant Thrive. I know the Trek isn't a first choice around here, but I really liked it from the first photos I saw of it. Riding it, compared to dozens of other brands and types...just sold it to me. The wife's Thrive...is a roll of the dice. The Giant dealer wasn't even aware of its existence the day we ordered it. Love at first sight is no way to buy a bike, but this one just captivated her. Hope some reviews, (favorable), come out on it soon, just to keep her anticipation level stoked. Since deposits have been made, I've turned research toward accessories and such, all cross-referenced against the knowledge and experience base so prevalent within this group of helpful individuals on this forum. Thanks for all the assistance thus far and in the future..............WedgeSG

Giant Thrive... looks kinda cool. Wonder why they used liner-pull V-brakes on it?

Anyhow a full CF flat-bar road bike for $1500-ish? Sounds like a pretty good deal.

I've tried riding with one earbud and it was super annoying with the wire and the other bud dangling and such. I've seen some pretty good reviews of a bluetooth earpiece that isn't too expensive. Saw it tested on 5th Gear where they used it in convertible cars with the tops down at 100 MPH and they reported good sound quality. Been thinking of getting one and streaming music or podcasts to it while riding.

I put it in my right ear then throw the other earbud around to the other side and tuck it in my shoulder strap. Then the wire Hangsdown the center of my back and I have it come under my left arm and hook my shuffle to my shoulder strap. This keeps everything close to me so nothing dangles or gets caught. I love these earphones because they NEVER fall out no matter how sweaty I get or wet outside it is.

Here is a more expensive, but neater looking alternative:

Hate the bars that came on my new bike so I took that opportunity to upgrade. Short and shallow, ergo drops, and aero flat tops.

Between your house and the school - looks like little community garden plots or something.

Very nice! Im curious to how the ergo drops feel. I ride shallow drops but really dig the look of the aero and ergo.
