Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Replacing brake pads

I find that I've ridden so much over the past two years that my brake pads are worn down. I want/need new ones. I have a pair of 2005-ish Xenon caliper brakes. What should I get?

Here's the Probikekit page: Brakes & Spare Pads. Here are what appear to be my options:

1. Campagnolo BR-RE600 Caliper Brake Pads for pre 2000 Chorus, Record and Athena

Call me a complete doofus, but, erm, does this mean these inserts wouldn't fit into my brake pads?

2. Campagnolo Record/Chorus/Centaur Cartridge Brake Pads

Would these inserts work?

3. PBK Campagnolo Cartridge Brake Set (for pre 2004 Campag)

Yeah, I'm probably clueless, but will this not work with my Xenon brakes?

4. PBK Campagnolo Replacement Cartridge Brake Set for "2007 skeleton calipers and post 2005 Record and Chorus calipers"

What about these?

I like the idea of just replacing the rubber. How do you do that? Do you have to pry the old ones out and then glue the new ones in?

My 2006? Xenons are, like Mirage, different from the other shoes in that the pads and shoes are integral. The bolt goes straight into the rubber pad. I think you might have better luck if you search for Mirage pads.

You should be able to replace your none cartridge pad setup with a cartridge set up. Just get one that has the pad and the metal holder and after that all you will need to buy are the replacement pads, slide the old one out and the new one in.

Campi Road Holder 8/9 speed Record group

Campi 2000 Road Holder 10 speed group - Campi 2000 holder with nuts and washers and dual compound inserts 1 pair = 40 grams

I don't know which one you will need for Mirage but get one of these. KoolStop brand holders and you can use the cartridge pads in them.

You need to check on those replacement pads and make certain that the bolts are not too big in diameter for the slots on the brake calipers. That was a problem I encountered in aftermarket replacements for my 1995 Mirage brakes. Some people recommended filing out the slots a couple of millimeters. Record cartridges have historically not fit Mirage calipers.

So, basically either option 3 or 4 in my first post should work, shouldn't they? I'm just confounded by the "pre-2004." Were the brakes different, or something? Why wouldn't those ones work? (They're the only ones in stock at PBK).

That pre 2004 has me a little confused too. I know there are pre and post 2000 campy brake pads but I know nothing of a change in 2004.

PBK has free shipping and I want to get a few other items from them, so I'd really like to get the brake pads from them.

What could they possibly mean by "pre-2004" pads? Is it possible that the bolts might not fit into the calipers of my 2006 Xenon brakes? I mean, from the photos they don't look all that different in terms of where they attach to the brake calipers.

F'it, I'm just gonna order the "pre-2004" pads. I mean, this isn't rocket science. Is it?
