Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

CAAD6 Question

I picked up a sweet CAAD6 on eBay last night (unsure of year but it is a Stars and Stripes Saeco version) and in my post-bid stupor I realized that I am unsure if the BB on the bike is BB30 or is the English standard. I've been attempting to do research all morning (instead of actually working) and am fairly certain that CAAD6 frame was part of the SI generation and only comes with the BB30 option.

I can't tell from the pics from the post (attached) which type of BB it is, but if you can that would be greatly appreciated.

Does anyone know if this is certain, that every CAAD6 is a BB30?

If so I will be extremely bitter and will have to hunt down one of those adapters because I already have a full Ultegra group ready to go for this frame and don't want to spend even more money on the BB and the SI crank which are hard to find on the cheap. I would also have to pray that when it arrives the BB is in good shape and can handle the adapter, or else I basically have to junk the frame and go into Paypal arbitration to get my money back.

Thanks

I don't know if this is certain, but, hey - BB30 is the wave of the future, welcome to 2009, etc.

The frame in your picture doesn't look like a big BB to me, but what do I know?

Paypal arbitration to get your money back? Seriously?

It doesn't look like there is a bottom bracket in that frame. It certainly is old enough that it's going to have a standard English threaded bottom bracket shell. You will need to pick up a bottom bracket for your Ultegra crank if you don't already have one. Unless it was advertised that the bike would come with a bottom bracket bearing, then you'll loose the arbitration for sure. Bottom brackets are usually bought separate from the frames.

I don't know which it is, but frankly, making sure that you're purchasing the right frame is your responsibility, not the seller's. BB size and threading are kind of a big deal - if it's not listed, you need to ask.

It looks like a standard bottom bracket size to me but I can't be sure. It seems you are doing your extensive research a little late in the game. It's best to do the research before you bid on an item. There is no way you would win in arbitration for getting a differant type bb than the one you assumed was on the frame. If the threads were unusable is a differant story.

1+ Unless the seller lied about it.

If it makes you feel better, the shell doesn't look oversized, suggesting that it is the standard English threaded BB.

I'm too much of a puss to ever do arbitration anyway, and its true most of the fault would have been on me. I would just have been extremely bitter to have to throw down for bearings and a crank (cheapest I could get would be about 200 for gossamer BB30 cranks/BB). I would only have been upset because of the lack of information, not misinformation.

I know people put frames on consignment through eBay and I wasn't sure if the seller even knew what BB30 was, and he doesn't have to write that in the description. I ended up getting a response that is English and I already have an Ultegra BB so it seems that all is well.

I didn't realize that it could have been BB30 until after because I saw it and bid at literally the last minute.

U got scammed - CAAD6 is supposed to be BB30 - probably repainted CAAD4/5.

Look at the Cannondale manual - the CAAD6 was only made in 2001 and both models were BB30...

(I'm just joking around, no "RXXXX" on the frame indicates this was a frame purchased separately, who knows why it's not BB30)
