Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Powertap/wheel recommendations

I've be lusting after a Cycleops powertap, but my bike currently has Mavic 2008 Ksyrium SL clincher wheels, which I understand aren't compatible with the spokes of the powertap.

If I have to replace the entire rear wheel, what's a good choice for something about the same weight/performance as the Ksyrium SL?

Powertap SL+, DT Swiss Aerolite spokes and Niobium 27mm rims if you are worried about weight.

If you ask me, the best way to buy a PT with a wheel is through Williams Cycling. Go to their site, they have some great deals.

I recently bought a complete PowerTap wheelset from Excel Sports. I chose 28H DT Swiss RR1.1 rims with revolution spokes in the front and left rear, 14/15 spokes for the right rear. The rear wheels weighs 1000 grams and the front 680 with the matching cyclops front hub.

I compared the weight to my Fulrum Zeros and they are only about 170 grams more.

I actually did this deal (sort of). If you don't want the whole wheel build as they spec it, you can get the PT Comp hub from them for $549. I want to build it up with a DT Swiss RR 1.2 so it matches my front rim. Plus I want silver, so I'm going to have my LBS build it up for me. Wireless isn't important to me and neither is light weight (for this build). The PowerTap Comp does everything I need a power meter to do.

It's not listed.
But I talked to Any Clark via email and he said he'd sell them separately if I didn't want to use an RR 1.1 rim. Had I not wanted to match, I'd have just gone the route listed on the site.

OH, and I forgot to mention: all of the electronics ARE included.

"Each system comes complete with a wheel, the Power Tap computer head, the seatstay-mounted sensor cable, all mounting hardware, plus Cycleops PowerAgent analytical software (Mac and PC compatible), plus a "Training with Power" DVD." Overall, this is cheaper than most places can do the hub for without the electronic hardware.

Yes, we know you run a triple. For anybody who runs a standard crank having to run one of their supported cranks is not as limiting as it may seem.

I liked spending $549 on my new 09 PowerTap Comp.
Wireless doesn't mean a whole lot to me so this was the way to go for my needs.

I got a Powertap Wheelset from Ligero almost a year ago. Niobium 27mm rims with Sapim CX-Ray spokes (cheaper than DT Aerolites)

I had a front wheel built to match. My bike feels no heavier than with the Ksyrium SLs I had.

And then there is the 3x cost difference.

Looks like no compact either. 130mm BCD only at this time.

I really wish I could decide what to do for power training too. I have pretty much decided on the Powertap Pro+ with a Garmin 705, but can't decide on a wheelset either.

The compacts are supposed to be soon. Things are hectic for them with the Tour of California coming up, hopefully soon after that.

PowerTap works best for me with multiple bikes and different set ups...

As I am a hill climber, I am always trying to figure the lightest PT build...

Best (and least exotic) I can do is a Zipp 202 but I just can't justify around $3000 to save about 300 g (.66 lbs) from my current DT Swiss set up...

The wheel set would be my race wheels. Can I justify a wheelset just for racing...

Coach say so...

Wife says no...

Kristin Armstrong has one, so it's only going to be a matter of time before it will be available to the general public, I'd imagine.
