Back injury rant
So I tweaked my back last week twisting to pick somthing up and was a bit sore in my lumbar region for about a day but then it started to get better so I got on my trainer and banged out an easy 35km's last Wed night and then a tough 30km on Friday and then it all went downhill...
Sunday morning group train ride (indoor) we were working on power and were doing all out intervals and i must have tweaked it again and have been in agony since.
Monday I went to a chiro and he seemed to help a bit but I was still in major pain (5th lumber: pinched nerve..) and can barely walk. yesterday I went to this Kinisiologist (spelling?) and this made a good difference and I was able to walk properly for the rest of the afternoon and evening but this morning came around and I'm back to being crippled.
Anyone have anything similar? What was the solution?
The pain is in my lower back and shoots into my right leg but no lower than my knee. I have been trying to stretch out my (tight) hamstrings and do some glute exercises (I was told I have weak glutes!).
Anything to help would be great...I am now officially in the "mad" portion of this slow recovery. I want to do something, anything that resembles riding a bike or exercise!
Thanks
Rant over.

Been there done that. Unfortunately, I have never found a quick fix. Massage helps me the most, maybe Chiro to a point, Kinesiology seems to work but that too takes a while. What I did do is pick up the Ab Lounge (no laughing) to help me do crunches, and stretch when I can otherwise not move well.
Time, I think, will be the answer........

Sounds similar to a muscle spasm. I used to get them occasionally and without drugs would take a couple of weeks to get over it. Then I used Advil and they would feel better after a couple of days.

Almost sounds like sciatica.
Anyway as other has inferred, no quick remedy. NONE NADA AIN't GONNA HAPPEN.
Best thing is warm heat 15min/hr. (I don't subscribe to the rotation of hot and cold for back pain)
EXCEPTIONAL stretch to try.
Pigeon pose (google it) Do it right after the heat. (long slow steady stretch)
If you do that right, it will really stretch you right at the ball joint on your hip. (Takes time - meaning weeks if it's NOT serious. If you have full blown sciatica, or bulge in a disk, it will take longer)
Don't do the simple toe touches to stretch

give it another week. if it doesn't improve go see your doc and a spine doc.
i just went through this. mine was above knee then woorsened to below the knee after prednisone. prednison ruled out muscle issues. it ended up being a herniatic disc and required surgery. if you lose strength in effected leg, get to a specialist and they'll guide through all the avenues which ultimately an mri will tell the tale.

yah. yer busted for a while. but...you can deal, and learn some yoga. I have similar issues: back from some old crashes; neck, from who knows what; shoulder from skiing accidents; knees from everything; and now I can overtax my left hip. They will flare and I'll ice and change the yoga a little, and be busted for a while. So far it has always come back.

I have had years of back pain issues, some so badly that it would take me an hour to get to the john. I have found that a good chiro and AK, as you have been to, helps a lot. I spent some time with a personal trainer in the guy and he had me working on core strength exercises and that perhaps make the biggest difference in preventing back issues from flaring up again. Mine tend to be L4, L5 region.

back in my racing days I had a persistent lower back tweaked nerve, probably from overtraining and an imperfect fit. It came back every spring and hung on until I took a solid easy year, and hasn't been back since.
I also injured my back doing some engine work a few years ago, tweaked to the point of near immobility for a couple of days. It took time to heal, but for two years every overexertion seemed to flare it right back up. I got into the habit of being more careful, and have been trouble free for a long time now.
I guess the point is that back problems can take a long time to heal, and you may have to be careful and make some adjustments to get the best recovery. I have a good back now, at 44, and ride about like I did when I was 20. Good luck!

This might be too simple but I had similar symptoms (pain in the back and down the leg but not past the knee) that went away after I put an Icy/Hot back patch the whole day for about three days in a row. My symptoms might not have been as severe as yours, though, since I never had to go to a chiropractor or doctor.
Good luck!

Last Sunday evening, I worked out with weights. No problem noticed, but I believe I may have done something wrong.
Monday morning, I got up went to the bathroom, then walked out and leaned over to drop something in the laundry basket. It felt like someone plunged a knife in my back about 2 inched below my waist.
I've barely been able to walk all week, and when I do, I look like Abe Vigoda on the old Barney Miller Show.
Today I went to see the doc. After poking and prodding, she decided she isn't sure if it is muscle or disc problems, so she is going to treat it as muscle problem for the next two weeks: Prescriptions for painkillers and muscle relaxers, and I'm to see a Physical Therapist. If there is no improvement in two weeks, they will do an MRI to look for a disc issue. She says the PT can also be effective for a disc problem.

Well I went back to the Kinisiologist today and I have to say I am feeling a bit better. I have been doing some stretches for my hamstrings and glutes and can now walk semi-normaly.
The doctor guy gave me some supplements to take as well...seems that that i have some imbalances in my system. I'm a bit skeptical but am willing to try anything to be able to get back to normal and back on the bike.
I'm going to look for that flexiril stuff. is it an over the counter?

I have suffered from lower back pain since my back went out on my when I was 17. Used to get the horrible pain, that would keep me nearly immobile for about a week, once to twice a year. Jan 2008 I turned 31 and had the pain again. Lasted close to 2 weeks and was very difficult to get around. The pain subsided but then came back in Feb, March, and April. I finally decided to go to the Chiropractor. After x-rays they determined my spine needed to be reshaped to relieve the pain. My lower back was curved to the point that the hole the nerves go through was very small and just pinched them.
I just completed 10 months of treatments, at least one a week, and I have not had anything except some minor pain in my lower back. Nothing even close to what I was experiencing. I can ride my bicycle with no pain and I also road race my sport bike with no problems at all.
I know chiropractors seem all cheesey and odd when you see them but their treatments worked wonders on me. No pills and no gimmicks.
