Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Irvine, CA crash

In December while riding on the bike path through Shady Canyon in Irvine, CA, I hit black ice on one of the bridges and fractured my pelvis and hip. Let it suffice to say that I had major surgery and spent almost 2 months in a wheelchair. I'll be on crutches for a while. I have a titanium bike and now a titanium reinforced pelvis and hip.

My question to those who have ridden through Shady Canyon: have you had a similar experience or know of someone who did? This could include crashing on the bridge while it was wet or for other reasons. Any help would be appreciated. Just send me a private message.

Sorry to hear about your crash. I've ridden that stretch hundreds of time as was wondering why an "ice" warning was now posted. Get well soon.

Bridge freezes Before Roadway.

Please tell us you're not planning on suing the Governmental entity responsible for the bike path because you slipped on ice.

Yeah... which usually translates to "no bikes allowed".

Land of the free, land of the lawsuit! Man you'll love your settlement but expect that trail to close down. Go ahead and ruin for everyone because you fell! own up to it and recognize that its part of riding and you can't control mother nature! Soooo sorry if I pee someone off.

Smelling a lawsuit is one thing, but just went off to the races with that one.

Be careful what you say when it's based on assumptions.

huh?

Someone rides a bike with 20-25mm wide tires in weather cold enough to generate ice, and crashes on their own, so that will generate a lawsuit?

That is typical of what is wrong with this country. My stupidity is someone else's fault. Give me a f'ing break.

I think its privately owned road? Don't worry, Mark McGwire pays tons of homeowner fees to cover it. As well as those rich pro tennis players that live up there.

This is exactly the reason I think we should have the titanium hips installed BEFORE crashing.

I keed, I keed... good luck with, well... all of it!

My friend, mentioned his co-worker eating it because of the black ice on the bridge as well... Since then i've been very careful on those wooden death traps. I'm sorry you were seriously injured.

Side note, I have seen caution signs now, right before entering the bridges. I'm not sure if I remember seeing them before though.

The jist of my post was unclear.. I meant to say I hope everything turned out ok with his health.. the lawsuit comment was meant with touch of scorn. I hate our litigious society as much as the next guy.

I've seen caution signs that say "this area is privately owned and all you loosers need to get out". Seriously, its by the tennis courts.
BigTea, I just home you feel better and be able to ride soon! SoCal is the last place I would think there would be ice over the bridge.
BTW, I really did used to see M. M. at the Albertsons there. We would fight for the last box of steriods.

I think I should add some facts for those who are jumping to conclusions. 1) On the morning of the accident the temperature was 42 degrees. 2) To my knowledge there are no "bridge freezes before roadway" signs in Orange County, whether it be for highways, streets or bikeways. 3) The bridge is at almost a 90 degree angle from the approach on the bike path making the bridge surface hard to see before riding on it.

I have ridden through Shaddy Canyon many times but only in good weather. There are several wooden bridges that would probably be very slippery when wet. In addition, there are lots of twists and turns with climbs and drops. There is a lot of potential for an accident on this road.

Sorry to hear about your injury. I hope you recovery soon and don't let this injury keep you from riding.

Ahhh, you are talking about the bridge up on top of the hill, not the other one.

oohhhh, well yea - that makes perfect sense now...clearly it is not your fault that you chose to go riding on that path. shame on the person that had the idea to put a path up for you to ride on. and shame on them for not anticipating human ignorance (in other words, your inability to T H I N K that a bridge could possibly be icy). come on folks, do we really need warning signs EVERYWHERE telling us that danger could potentially be ahead or can we just use our common sense.

I don't understand how any of this absolves you from being responsible for your crash.

I'm sorry you were injured so badly, that must be terrible. Heal up and get back on the bike.

I smell a new purpose for you - campaign for these signs! Another idea is ones that say "Ground is hard - don't fall onto it."

If it was 42 degrees, that's a bit too warm for ice, but I learned (the hard way) from mountain biking that wet wooden bridges are slick as ice.

I have hammered over that bridge at high speed many times - each time knowing that, due to the strange angle, I was pushing my luck. I will be more careful now - thanks for the warning. (seriously.)

Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

I've never ridden that bridge but for $10k or 5% of your gross settlement I will be happy to give sworn testimony that people should not be held responsible for the risks they knowingly assume. For another $5k I'll specifically testify that 58 YO 220 lb males riding skinny tire bikes on wet, shaded wooden bridges can not be held responsible for the risks they knowingly assume nor for the consequences thereof.

You guys are mean. Get better BigTea. I don't care what you do. We as cyclist shouldn't judge how people ride. Not everyone is perfect.
