Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

shorts are cheaper, but tend to ride down. Bibs are worth the extra cost....IMHO

You can get your shorts pulled down. Bibs don't pull down. Shorts don't keep your junk in place. Bibs do.

I always wear bibs on long rides, the biggest plus in my book is no waistband digging into your sides for hours on end. Bibs also do a much better job keeping the chamois from moving around.

Once you try bibs it's tough to go back to shorts IMHO.

The lack of an elastic waistband cutting into your abdomen when in the drops is a huge plus for me. I usually use bibs for rides and shorts for the commutes, as they're easier to change in and out of at work.

No wedgies with shorts. I'm thin but I have a long torso. Bibs have not worked for me because of the aforementioned wedgie effect.

I personally don't see much difference. I have many different kits including Assos bibs but just don't get it. Of course I'm a triathlete kind of person so my longest rides are 120 miles or so. Above that it might matter. I don't know.

No comparison.

Shorts: no pros
Bibs: no cons

It took wearing them to get it for me.

Bibs con: you have to take off everything on top to have a dump.

This is a drag if your pockets are loaded with stuff

That's where coffee helps in the morning before you get your gear on and ride.

That's true though if it's an emergency.

This is why you get full zip jerseys. Best thing next to bibs.

Bibs are real nice, but if you have a thinner build you may not have issues with shorts with the elastic digging into you or your ass crack showing.

I wear bibs most of the time but go back to decent quality shorts when it's really hot, just to avoid the extra fabric.

I have bibs and shorts and it usually just comes down to which ones are clean when I'm getting ready for a ride. As with other forms of equipment I think it depends on the brand and quality, I have Pearl and I have Nike, the nikes give good support, but the pearls are good for riding all day. Try lots and find out what works for you.

Bibs do a much better job of keeping the male package snug, although sometimes not snug enough for me. But shorts really are a problem in this regard.

I like bibs over shorts in every category, except when I have to take a piss.
