Where was your First Century?
I'm hoping to do a Century with my brothers and my dad this summer. We were thinking of doing the NYC to Montauk ride.
Where did you ride on your first century, and when was it?

Early 80's. Brooklyn to Bear Mountain. I would suggest to drive over the bridge to Nyack or thereabouts and ride up. You don't want to spend 20 miles to the bridge and add another 20 to get back home all in nasty NYC traffic. That's 40% riding in traffic.

Oxford to Cambridge in England, with some extra faffing about at the end to tick it over 100.

1987, my dorm at U of A in Fayetteville, AR to War Eagle State Park and back.
I remember not being able to climb the stairs, then eating a whole pizza and drinking much cheap beer.
I still daydream about that ride actually.

September 2007. Heartland Century sponsored by the Quad Cities BC. All on the Illinois side. The last 10 to 15 miles were tough. I was ready for it to end. Did not eat enough.

The first time I rode 100 miles or more in a day, I was 11. Doing a 4 day 1-way trip (we got a ride back) to Nags Head in NC. 4 days, 432 miles.

Back in the late 1900's, I was a teenager finishing up a two week youth bike tour, we had already rode 75 miles or so that day, so we threw off our packs and made a quick circuit from Brazil to Terre Haute and back. Big fun, I didn't even know it was called a century then, all I knew was that I'd ridden 100 miles in a day.

Two friends and I rode up to Auburn and back (from Sacramento). Left at 7 in the morning, managed to get back by 6 or so. Eating a burrito in the middle was NOT a good idea. Second century I've ever done was TODAY! From SFSU to Olema, Paradise loop, then back.

1973. TOLSC (Tour of Lake St. Clair); Michigan/Ontario, Canada.
First day 120 miles. 2nd day only 89 miles.
KRhea: also rode the 1974 Hancock Horizontal Hundred in 1974 and went back and rode it again on its 25th anniversary in 1996. Great fast flat ride!

Wilson 100 in Atlanta around '92. I never rode over 50 miles previous. At mile 70 I was hating life but I spent the last 10 miles pulling a group of 4 because nobody was else was strong enough to work. I attacked with a mile to go, only to discover the route was actually 103 miles.

I did laps around the Morgul-Bismarck, mainly because that kept me within 15 miles of home, (in case I wimped out), and there is a convenience store at the NW corner where I could refuel and use the restroom.

Septmeber 2006. Started at the near by Budweiser plant. Free food, beer, and massages to everyone after. I didn't get any beer though since I wasn't old enough, and I'm still not.

2006, Solvang Century. What fun that was! I'd never been so energized and depleted at the same time.
'07 and '08 on the tandem, even more fun. This year I'm back on the Diva again, and alone (and hoping to meet some BF peeps the day before).

1986 Primevera Century, put on by the Fremont Freewheelers. My Raleigh "TEAM USA" frame broke the week before so I put my road pedals on my 34 lb mountain bike and pumped the tires up hard. I got a lot of dirty looks from guys I was passing on the climbs but they didn't mind me pulling in pace lines. By the end my shoulders were in severe pain from 100 miles without moving my hands around.
At the finish there was this guy named Steve Roberts hanging out, who was famous for having buillt this 300 lb recumbent with 6 computers on it. He didn't do the ride of course- his bike was way too heavy, he wasn't all that fit, and all that facial hair would have been a serious amount of aerodynamic drag. But he had a circle of women around him. Shows what being famous will to do one's attractiveness. One woman came up to me all breathless and asked if that was Steve Roberts, then eyed all the competition already there and sighed.

2006 the elephant rock century in Castle Rock Colorado. I found it to be somewhat tiring but fairly easy. My worst one was in January of 2008. It took me 10 hrs or so on a mountain bike and then a fixed gear in the snow. Idiotic idea.

in Kenya. it was nice. gradually up hill over the 60 miles and then gradually down hill for the inbound 60 miles. sort of like cheating, in my opinion, but it still counts.
