April Bicycling mag
I got mine in the mail yesterday and was browsing through it in the reading room. The first thing that caught my attention was the review of the Lynskey Helix. Base price for this frame is $4500 but the one tested was polished to a mirror finish. It added $2000 to the price. WOW! It sure is pretty bit I don't see too many people going for that option. Well maybe I am wrong. Read the story below.
On the last page was a story of a 14 year old kid who got a Trek 6.9 Madone Project One for Christmas. It said he had a professional fiitting and decided to go with a slightly too large frame with a shorter stem. I find it hard to believe that the fitter suggested that. They could have bought him 3 5.2's in various sizes as he grows for about the same price. The parents can obviously afford it but it gets another WOW from me.

My wife go her hands on that issue before I got home and decided to edit the cover with a sharpie. It now reads:
Why you DO NOT Need a new bike this year: I'll Kill you

I had to make a deal with my wife just to get my PowerTap. No new big bike purchases for 2008.
How will SushiJoe do it? With having a PT, it should be totally worth it.

I think my wife would mention the same thing to me, and all I am trying to get are some new Reynolds carbon clinchers.

I got the issue as well, but I found the prices a bit on the high side (maybe they quoted the MSRP, I dunno). For example, the Fuji Team they've quoted for $2500, is actually $1249 at the Performance Bike local to me...

My take is that lynskey is playing games with their MSRP. They're setting prices inordinately high so they can have all these sales to make people think they're getting a deal.

I make sure to show the new expensive bikes to my wife to soften her up to high prices. If I keep showing her the new 5-10k bikes she won't be so shocked when I spend 3k for a new frame. Yeah, right!

So did he try to talk the dad out of the too large frame? A 14yr old kid can grow an inch in a month or two. It seems strange to spend that much on a bike that will be outgrown in less than a year.

In a somewhat related vein, is it my imagination or is "Bicycling" magazine fairly worthless?
RBA is much better, IMO.

If you do it right, your wife never notices, and two months after you get the bike, your 15 year old kid says 'Daddy is that a new bike?'. Your response 'No, I've had that for a long time'. If you time it right, your kid walks away looking vaguely puzzled, forgets about it the instant her cellphone rings (which happens 15x an hour) and the topic never rears its ugly head ever again.

In a moment of rational behavior, my wife spent my entire bonus the moment it hit our bank account on our debt. Then she felt so guilty about being so sensible, she insisted I buy a new bike. Sometimes these things work themselves out...

And you wonder why the economy is tanking. It is your patriotic duty to stimulate commerce by purchasing a brand new Cervelo, Cannondale, or any $3,000+ bicycle between now and April 1. You have your instructions. Don't let us down Lucky. We're counting on you pal.
