2009 Trek 2.1
My riding is pretty casual and mainly for exercise. During the nice weather I do about 60 miles/week. I have been reading a lot of good things about the 2009 trek 2.1 and was looking for opinions regarding this bike.

It's a pretty good bike. If this comes with all Shimano Tiagra components, I think that there are cheaper options that will provide better componentry and just as great of a ride.
Here are a few examples:
Your choice
Bianchi Via Nirone 7
Giant Defy 1
Specialized Sequoia
Specialized Allez Sport
Cannondale Synapse
I hope this helps!

If you like the bike then go for it! I have the Madone 4.5 (first road bike) which is the same geometry. I love it.
Lotta people here will recommend something other than Trek. Problem for me was that there aren't many options for brands unless I was willing to drive a ways. When I started talking seriously about buying the bike, the salesman quickly knocked 20% off the price and I ended up a bit lower than that.
Make an offer and see how they deal with you.

How much off MSRP is the dealer offering? I recenty ordered two Trek bikes from my LBS (not on the floor) and they were discounted 20%.

Trek bikes are very good, just overpriced (at MSRP). If you can get the folks at your local bike shop to take down the price, then I would get it.

For reference, I just bought a 2008 Giant OCR1 (the model before their Defy series came out), with all Shimano 105, for $950 + tax.
I recommend that you shop around for a little bit. As I said, it's a good bike, but there are cheaper options out there.

Neither of the 3 Trek Dealers around me sell their bikes for MSRP. They are all discounted to some degree, usually about 10-20%, depending upon the model. Then there are sales on top of that every now and then.

Another data point for you: I just bought a 2009 Trek 2.3 from my LBS for $1400, they didn't charge me sales tax and they threw in a free computer plus 50% off shorts and pedals. Probably not an amazing deal but a good price for a very nice bike I believe.
The price tag on the 2.3 was $1650. So you should definitely be able to haggle them down a bit due to the economy and timing.

I got the 2008 2.1 a few weeks ago for $977. I went to several other LBS and couldn't find anything that was comparable to it in components and price. It has Tiagra FD/Shifters and 105 RD. All the other shops had bikes that had Sora in that price range. I have only been able to do 30 miles on the bike so far and 15 of those were today and I absolutely love it. It's like riding a piece of butter compared to my Schwinn Varsity I rode last year.
They threw it on the scale before I left and it was 20.5 lbs with computer, cages, and pedals. That was almost 12 lbs ligter and my last bike.

Ha, was just about to make a thread about this.
Just at my LBS about 10 minutes ago and they had a 2.1 but not in my size so I tried a 52cm 1.5 and it could have gone either way (52 or 50), so I said order me up the 50 with a compact crank.
I'm getting it for $1150 tax included. I also get 15% off accessories but they didn't have squat for single sided SPD's so what accessories should I get? Also the guy asking if the 2.1 is tiagra all-around, yes except for the rear derailer which is a 105.

I just bought one and I love it. I've only put about 25 miles on it, but boy is it fast - and it's comfortable too.
That's not a bad price - around what I paid.
Don't forget about a computer and other accessories, though.

ah yes, a computer. I'm planning on getting one that fits in that hole in the fork. Whats a good website for some inexpensive SPD's single sided?

I have been looking at the 2.3 triple. The 2009 is almost $1900. My Lbs has it on sale for $1700 which does not seem like much of a sale. A bike shop much farther has a 2008 for $1300. Is that an ok price or should I try to get them to go lower.

you can always walk in with the 1300, but put 100 or so in your other pocket and see if they'll come down. That way, if they do you save the money and if not, you still have the money to pay for it

Mine arrived last week. So far I haven't been out on the road as there is still too much snow. However on the roller and my trainer it feels good
I was about to pull the trigger on a Giant Defy1 but couldn't resist getting the Trek. This is my first road bike so I don't have much to compare it to. Tiagra Grouppo for most except the rear Der is 105. Got a good deal 1200 cdn. Got cheap deal on Incite Link DW and speedtrap sensor with the bike. Got some 105 pedals as a gift and I've been set. Only done trainer miles on the bike and I already want to replace the seat ... Other than that the first impressions are good and she's awesome to oogle. No brochure pictures do it justice and neither does my crappy cell phone camera!

You should be able to get at least 10% off MSRP without breaking a sweat.

The Trek 2.3 is a nice bike but overpriced. It is a $1400 bike. $1650 for a Taiwanese frame w/ small section carbon seatstays is too much. Most of the Treks I have seen this year are overpriced but then again if people are willing to pay the price I guess it is not overpriced.

I also agree that at MSRP, these are overpriced. The CAAD9 is priced similarly and IMO is a far better frame. Trek has the biggest name in the business and so they can justify the higher MSRP. There's nothing wrong with the 2.1 or 2.3, they're just not priced well. In their previous lifetimes when they were the 2100 and 2300 they were built with US made frames and were 105 and Ultegra. Trek appears to have moved them down to Tiagra and 105, and gone to a Taiwanese built frame at similar pricing.
If you're getting a good deal on one, i'd go for it, but the Tiagra version would have to be well below $1000. You can get a CAAD9 for about that price and you're getting a nicer frame.

TRM Cycles in Pittsburgh was willing to sell me a 2008 Madone 4.5 for $1615. You'd better be able to get a damned 2.3 for less than that....I love my Treks, but paying retail is simply insane.
