Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Any advice for adjusting cleats?

Hello,

I got my first clipless pedals with my new bike and I'm not sure how to adjust the cleats. Is that something that needs to be professionally done or is there a way to figure it out?

Thanks.

Going by my Greg LeMond book, try to get the cleat over the ball of your foot, I know some people like it just behind the ball but over it is a good start. That should give you maximum leverage. After fiding a few times, try moving it forward or backward a centimeter ot two at a time to see a difference.

My initial setup is to have the pedal axle under the ball of the foot and my ankle bone 1cm from the crank arm.

Tighten the cleats and ride around the neighbourhood with the shoe straps/laces loose. Observe how your foot floats in the shoe and you'll get an idea if you need to swing the heel in or out. After I've got the angle about right I'll usually need to move the cleat fore/aft to get the ball of the foot back over the axle.

Now... go for a short ride and listen to your knees. Readjust the cleats until you feel aligned.

Do not go for a long ride until you're happy with the cleat alignment.
