Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Check out the CTC web site - they have a forum devoted to LEJoG.

If you do a direct route- taking in main roads and plenty of traffic it is about 800 miles. Bit more casual and there is another route that is about 1,000 miles. Then how many days do you want to do it in?

And with a back-up crew----Doing it on an organised tour- or just starting one end and finishing later?

CTC would be your first port of call- but decide how you want to do it. Had 5 mates do it a few years ago- They arranged hotels en route- which is not that easy as some days were harder than others and had a following vehicle with spares and food. They did it in 7 days- and the youngest was 52. That was the short route and they did not like the amount of traffic involved.

You might also ask this question in the Long Distance forum if you're planning to set a record ...

Or the Touring forum if you're planning to do it at a more relaxed pace ...

As for training, I'd only use the rollers if the weather was really bad. Riding outside, and especially on as many hills as you can find, will get you in shape much better than the rollers. If I'm not mistaken one of the routes goes through Wales (I believe I've ridden part of that route) and there are some serious hills there.

Build up your distance on your weekly or twice weekly long rides until you are doing the distance you want to cover every day. Otherwise work on hill climbing.
