Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What's with all the Assos sizing charts?

Has anyone noticed that every site seems to have a different sizing chart for Assos? I bought a couple of FI Uno S5 bibs from Wiggle and their chart put me in a large, as does the Competitive Cyclist chart. However, the chart on Assos's (horrible) website puts me at the top of the medium. I am 5' 10.5" and weighing in at 157 right now, but that is my winter weight. I will be about 152-4 during cycling season.

Here is the deal. I love these bibs. They have the best chamois I have ever used, but they are just a little loose in the legs and waist (33" waist). I keep reading people referring to these shorts as a very snug fit, but mine are actually a bit loose. Not badly, but I wouldn't mind them snugger in the body when in riding position and tighter where they grip my thighs.

Anyone out there with my dimensions wearing the medium. I am concerned that the bib straps will be stretched tight if I get a medium, but I am thinking of order medium for my next pair.

Just FYI, I have a pair of PI Ultrasensors in medium and they are really too loose on me. However, when I tried a small, the bib straps were too short for my height. I know Assos are cut tighter, so I went with Large. Perhaps that was the wrong call.

Thanks in advance for any info.

I'm using the medium s5 mille bibs. I'm 165 lbs, 5'8" roughly 31 or 32 waist.

I'm just shy of 71" (155ish, 30-31" waist) and I got the Large Uno S5. They fit almost perfectly except that I'd like the bib straps to be a little (tiny bit) longer, because the chamois pad sometimes wedgies on me. The legs fit perfectly. They aren't tight around my waist when I'm in the riding position, but this doesn't seem problematic to me.

I'm afraid to try an XL because the waist and legs would probably be too loose. I'm considering taking the bibs to an alteration shop to get them to add a half inch (or so) of lycra to each of the bib straps, but will hold off on this to see if the wedgie effect goes away as the bibs wear a bit.

So, if you grew 2.5", would they be too short?

I have considered the tailoring option, if there are problems. I just wish a local shop had them in stock to try on.

Just go with the medium.

Well, I want to, but these things aren't cheap. I plan on getting up to five pairs for the season, and that will include the ones I already bought, so I am just looking for similar experiences. The sizing charts are crazy.

Leg length is perfect. I got a feeling if my torso were any longer the shoulder straps would be too tight. Right now the shoulder straps are pretty snug...

So after determining that I am, in fact, getting shorter as I age, I decided to order some mediums. Problem is that no one has them in stock. Anyone aware of anyplace with FI Unos in stock?

I've got the last generation Mille in a size smaller than the new generation F5 (whatever the hell their top rung bib is) that is supposed to offer more room. Damned if I can tell the difference other than and inch or so of leg length. Same for Voler bibs, too.

Thank you. That is exactly what I was looking for. I am a few pounds heavier, but shouldn't matter.

Assos bibs have whacked sizing. Anyone who claims they are built for a slim cyclist build is nuts. Last year I tried some and found that they are indeed built for regular sized people. I am 6'2", 31" waist, and the medium fit fine through the waist but the straps would barely fit over my shoulders and wedged the chamois up my ass while riding; the large had sufficiently long straps but was too loose in the torso area. 'Course, if the medium simply had stretchier straps they would have been fine, but they were NOT stretchy.

My nicer bibs are DeMarchi, which actually fit properly and are nicer quality than Assos anyway - and they cost less.

The straps are supposed to feel a bit tight when standing because it is optimized for the couched riding position. Embrace the male camel-toe.

No, they were way too tight even when riding. I actually got on the bike.

I'm pretty sure that the sizing changed when Assos started making their stuff in Bulgaria a few years ago. I have three pairs of F1.Mile Shorts all of which are size "Large". The last pair bought last year ("Assembled in Bulgaria") is looser fitting than the older Swiss made ones.

I can recommend this ebay seller: https://shop.ebay.com/merchant/tta_mem

He's got good stock, good pricing, great service (will combine shipping, responsive to emails, etc), and has been 100% reliable so far.

Uno bibs are $130 + shipping (now at $23 ). You should shop around, but know that this guy will deliver.

BTW, I'm 5'10" and 165-170# and fit comfortably in the Large FI.13 S5's, but find the Roubaix Bib knickers a bit loose in that size. Could also be the difference in chamois between the S5 and the bib knicks (Mille insert)

I found that ebay seller recommended in another thread. I am a bit turned off by the low price and high shipping scam. Just post the real price.

Anyway, it has been warming up and I am riding more. I tried my PI Ultrasensors yesterday and the abraded me like crazy, so I need more Assos. It is tempting to try DeMarchi, but having found a chamois that I like, I would just like to nail the size.

I've bought several Assos products from tta_mem and I've had nothing but good, prompt, courteous service.

The payment is usually in British Pounds, while the item has usually been shipped from Germany (and maybe once from Israel?).

I did end up buying a pair from that seller last night. Seems to be the only place with any stock. Once I get them, I will post the results of Large vs. Medium.

I never worry about the sizing charts- except to get an approximation of what size to get. Never buy clothing online- but at the LBS the other week and I bought an Assos jersey. Should have been a medium size- but too tight round the Gut. Went large and it fits fine.

Or perhaps all Assos wearers are Slimmer than me.

I'm almost 6'4 (32" waist) and had to get the XLG for comfortable shoulder straps that didn't feel like they were pulling me to the ground. The odd thing is, the Assos XLG FI Mille bibs are looser than the XLG S2 bibs-- by a decent amount. I need whatever size is in between those two...

Really? In the new S5? Seems to be the consensus that they are larger now.
