Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bontrager Race Lite wheel failure-replace?

My 04 Trek 5000 came with Bontrager Race Lite wheels. One year, 2,800 miles on good roads and the rear wheel has failed with a spoke literally pulling thru the rim. The metal of the rim is buckled and torn at the spoke. There are stress fractures at every spoke on the rear wheel; fewer stress fractures on the front wheel. I'm 6'1", 215lbs on a 60cm CF frame. I took the wheels to the Trek shop today; said they'd never seen a set of B'trager wheels do this; they're contacting B'trager and Trek to see what they'll do...more to come. Thoughts on what happened here or on what B'trager / Trek will do?

I don't think I'll want to put another set of same wheels under me. Another bike shop has adamantly recommended the Mavic Ksyrium SLs. Thoughts?

Trek should warranty them. The LBS will take some pictures and send them to the warranty dept at Trek. If your LBS says they've never seen this before, they're very lucky. My LBS seems to see this a couple times a month.

The Ksyriums are super super stiff, strong wheels. I ride em and love em. They're pricey though. Try the Elites if that's an issue.
