Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

This sort of thing is getting common with footballers in the UK. Wait until they're out the country playing, and go and rob their house.

This is not totally uncommon for "known" people. Since their schedules are out there, bike races for example, you can pretty much know that no one will be around.

So, what about his alarm system?

The one on my house is cellular, not hard wired. You can't cut the phone line to shut off the alarm.

Back in the day I was in the insurance business. A friend of mine worked for a company that insured a lot of celebrities. Their list of requirements to be insured with them was lengthy.

Zabriskie might as well have posted where the spare key was hiding so they didn't have to break in. Maybe it's not the best idea to post exactly what you are doing when you're not racing...

Blog and MySpace and Facebook away everybody. It's all good.

Sounds like an idiot move getting B&E'ed like that.
Insurance and a security system of some sort is a brainless
requirement when having that much loot around.

Too bad...so sad...glad it wasn't me.
I'm sure his insurance provider will pay out well...

Geez people...Enough with the Twitter crap...

The guy is a bike racer and there just happened to be a race in California...Twitter or no Twitter, the thieves would have known he was there. Do you think these people just woke up one morning and went 'Hey, this Dave Zabriskie guy just tweeted that he's at some race for 9 days'. They knew his schedule and knew he would be gone...

If handled properly the resident should get the cost of the items stolen, plus the cost to replace the items. As well as damage caused by the culprits. Unfortunately most people depend on the honesty of the insurance companies adjuster as opposed to hiring their own. A public insurance adjuster will usually get you far more money than simply going at it alone.

Yea. For a famous person, I don't think that tweeting was the key to this mystery.

There's a few alternatives as to how this could've gone down. None of which can be ruled out because of what we know, which really only what was stolen. The only thing I think can be surmised, and even this could be wrong, is the idea that there were at least a couple of people involved, just because of the reported volume of the theft. The thieves didn't necessarily have to know who Zabriske was. If they did, then they possibly could've taken their time because they knew he was out of town. If they didn't, then it wouldn't be terribly hard to spot a house that was unoccupied and figure out who lived there...

I don't think it is possible to know much about the culprits based off of what they stole. There's nothing on there that couldn't be fenced in some way. The statues, though possibly rare and probably containing serial numbers, can always be sold 'on the street' to collectors that don't really care to check because they're getting a great deal. Same with the bikes. With the bikes, they could easily ditch the frames and just sell the non-identifiable components. How much do you think that all the wheels on those bikes cost? Even with his medals and trophies, if they contained any precious metals, then they could always melt them down and sell that. Also, I'm sure you could find buyers for the cycling stuff that would easily be traced back to Zabriskie.

I'm not saying he was Twitterized, but why would anyone open up every moment like that. Why even put it out there for the world to see. I'm not paranoid, but I just don't get it. For someone in the public eye that wants fans I guess blogs/social network sites are a necessity (insert BF member here), but you got to think he's got other people that might get a feel for the type of person he is and just use it in a negative way.
" I'm watching a movie...I'm getting a speeding ticket...I'm at the team dinner...I'm on my way home" I just don't get it.......

Damn I have a friend that does worker's comp surveilance and has a facebook account just to spy on potential fraud cases. It's the best thing to happen to her business in a while.

The guy was on TV, the net and in the papers every day for 8 days. Probably a bit more exposure there than on twitter.

Wouldn't be surprised if the alarm system installation folks are parked in his driveway right about now.

Don't know about a Giro medal but all Olympic medals are bronze with either gold or silver plate over top. High quality plating but plating nonetheless. Of course you don't win them for the melt down value......

As noted above solid gold medals would bust the budget of even a international Olympics Committee.

Maybe I've watched too many James Bond movies in the past. But maybe there's a person/persons who will buy this stuff just because it's rare AND identifiable. Maybe that's their thrill. Maybe he doesn't care to ever sell it or display it. It's just cool to acquire it. You know, for thieves it's more about the process (planning, staking out, execution of the plan) of stealing than the item itself. Along with all the publicity that comes with the heist. But what do I know?

i don't like the idea of having one big house all to myself.. i think it's better to live with a friend or two who you get along with, that way someone is always gonna be around to guard your shiiiz... helps to have a couple big fat bulldogs in the bike room..

Something tells me that Goldfinger is not going to have DZ strapped to a table saying "No, Mr. Zabriskie, I expect you to ride."

As for the rest, come on guys, why don't you blame the victim a bit more? Guy lives on a mountain outside of Salt Lake, I hardly think home invasion-style burglaries are common in that locale.

When I first saw this thread title my reaction was 'he's well known, how do you fence D. Zabriskie?'.

But of course nobody would ever really steal Zabriskie. They would have taken Leipheimer who's easier to stuff in a car trunk.
