Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Well all frames are different, but generally, old frames are able to accept wide tires. I don't think they'd go much wider than 28mm, though.

Think it's just a mental thing with the non-sloping top tube. Thin tubes probably have something to do with it as well (makes the triangle look like it has a larger area)

I'm basing it off of head tube length--and the fact that my family has owned a ton of these old steel bikes (mostly shwinn, granted) and they are all huge.

Bicycle sizing followed different formulae back in the old days. Sizes that would be larger nowadays were considered medium-sized back then.

The belief among manufacturers that everyone buying a bike wants the same super-low, super-stretched out position that racers have.

That Basso is a thing of beauty, the only bum point is that bar wrap. Some white tape would top that frame off beautifully.

Why would you want drop bars if you wanted to sit upright?

See what happens when you wash your bike with hot water?

Who said anything about sitting upright?
Drops bars still offer the most hand positions and body positions, regardless of how high, low, far, close they are.

Changed the saddle, stem, bars, different rear wheel. I killed the tubular that was on the disc.

do you anodize the bits like your hubs and derailleur pulleys yourself or are they aftermarket kits?

The "cockpit" changed slowly when brifters replaced downtube shifters. Back in the day you raced in the drops and shifted on the downtube. Modern bikes are more often than not ridden on the tops and the bars are shallower so the head tube is shorter.

Thanks. The hubs and pulleys are old school Bullseye ones and came anodized (powdercoated for some colors on the hubs).
