Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Storage Racks and Cabling Under the Top Tube?

I have a fairly small apartment, and a couple o' road bikes, so my setup looks like this:

(Note that the width of the arms is fixed.)

I'm considering replacing one of my bikes, and at least some of the bikes I'm considering appear to have cable routing that runs on the underside of the top tube, like so:

Others have a straighter tube, but still run underneath rather than on top or internally.

Any ideas on if that type of cable routing is compatible with my storage rack?

Put a nice wad of foam on the arms of the rack and you should be fine.

I made my own version of a similar rack. The supports are much wider apart and are for the wheels. That way you can use it even on sloping top tubes. Is it possible to take your rack apart and widen the space between the supports?

I have two similar racks (one home made and shaky *giggle*) the cable don't seem to be in the way. I am sure there is already soem padding but as homebrew said some foam. if you are woried about your finish get some little peices od felt or flannel to stick in between the cable and frame

get some pipe insulation with precut slits of the appropriate size from the local blue or orange big box.

I'm just worried about putting a kink in the cable. Is that something of concern or no? would the pipe insulation prevent something like that?

I've been going through the same exact problem. As others suggested I got the grey insulating foam made for pipes and placed it over the rack arms. If you want you can slot the foam with a knife but after a couple hours the foam will compress and form fit around the top tube and cabling and then stay in this shape even if you remove the bike.

I had an Allez hanging from a similar rack. Never had a problem with the cables. getting in the way or getting kinked.

I carry my bikes on a trunk mounted rack - similar clamping positions, and no issues at all. Initially I would place some paper towels between the cable and the TT, but soon got lazy [as my wife had predicted], and the cable still does not scratch the TT.
