Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Bianchi Brava for a 10 year old?

While out "interviewing" the local lbs's today for my new road bike (I'm really inexperienced and want to buy from the lbs that I think will help me the most), I found a 07 Bianchi Brava for $350 (new). My daughter is 10 and needs a new bike and wants to join me, which of course I want to encourage.

The lbs owner set her up on the bike on a trainer, did some basic fitting, and it looked pretty good. The only concern was the reach to the brake levers due to her small hands. Our solution was to add some interrupter brakes (I don't remember what he called them). One odd thing is that I swore it was a 47cm frame, but the bianchi site doesn't list that as an available frame size. I'd like to think this bike would fit her for several years and then could be handed down to her brother.

Is this a good deal?
What's your thoughts on a 10 year old riding a bike like this? (we wont' be riding in town where the is lots of traffic - just out on country roads and charity rides when she's ready for one).

Thanks...

that bike for $350 new is a really good price. something like that in adult sizes would be retailed at $700 at least.

If the bike fits- it doesn't matter what the size is. She won't have it long in any case at the rate kids grow.

And as to whether it is a suitable for a 10 year old- If she is going to ride it- It is.

I think we're going to get the bike - pending one more question. Do you think the road bike tires (swapped out for the widest they'll go) are steady enough for her to ride limestone bike paths safely? Or...are we better off to find a good deal on a small framed cyclocross bike?

thanks again..
