Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Last thread on Wheelsets (I swear!)

Okay so I'm in a serious debacle here.

I'm looking at a $600 pair of Ksyrium SL's brand new with all the standard equipment.

or a $350 pair of 500 miles Easton EA90 SLX's with an improper hub but they include tires.

I'm really leaning towards the Ksyrium's but I'm worried that I'm overspending on myself here, help me feel better about my purchase BF!

(These are both Craigslist ads, so this stuff is kinda sketch!)

"Improper hub" on the Easton wheelset???? What do you mean- it's not original to the wheelset or it isn't functional?

After handing over $350, I'd wonder what you end up with.

And forget about the tires, that's not relevant given that you can often get tires at pbk for like 50% off.

what hub would you put in and what would it cost you to relace the wheel?

Oh sorry, I was referring to the Freehub, its Campy and a Shimano one costs $56 online! (ridic!)

So really its used wheels for 400 vs new for 600

I would imagine the Mavics rarely need truing though, and would hopefully last a good while in comparison.

Do you want them for every day/training wheels? The SL's are bullet proof and good for that. If you want a light weight climbing/training wheel look at the Soul 2.0, they run about $350 or the Willimas 19.

Total cycling has the 2009 Kysyrium Elites, new for under $500. They have been redesigned and are pretty comparable to the sl's now at only 1550g. I ordered myself a pair a few weeks back, and despite mixed reviews of Total Cycling, received them in a week's time undamaged and with all the paperwork and skewers. So far, I've only had them on the trainer, but I am hoping they will prove to be as bombproof as so many people have claimed them to be!

I ended up branching out to the Fulcrum Racing possibilities.

Though now I'm tied up between that $350 set of Easton's or a really expensive set of Fulcrum Racing 1's.

I want something to last, but I'm thinking the Easton's are the smartest set for me especially at that pricepoint.

The Williams look interesting if only because they use j-bend spokes and should be more conveniently/less expensively serviceable than any Ksyrium or many Easton wheels.

..So what is involved in changing the freehub on the used EA90 SLX's? Can one do this at home or do the wheels have to be sent to Easton?

Bought these, seemed like it's too good to be true, I also used Live.com Cashback to bring it down to $436 shipped. That color scheme is the 08 model so they can't be too beat up. I know Tubulars are going to be a pain in the ass but I'm not going to use these for everything I suppose. I think I'll get some gatorskin tubulars to start out. But I ride a red CAAD9 so the Aesthetic aspect is going to win hands down.

What do you guys think?
