Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My new white Pedal Force RS2 died today... glad I didn't!

After riding 32,000 miles without having an altercation with a car, my luck ran out today....

Today, a lady in a Honda SUV ran a stop sign and accellerated right into me. I'm banged up pretty badly, but the beautiful brand new 2009 Pedal Force RS2 will never be ridden again. The frame is totalled. The right side seat stay is cracked in two places, both of my brand new Dura-Ace 7850 CL carbon clinchers are bent majorly and who knows what else is wrong with the bike.

I came out of it at least fixable. It could have been much worse. The Honda Pilot accellerated into me, broke off the front license plate, sent me flying over the handlebars, tumbling on the pavement twice. My head never hit the pavement, thank goodness. I have major road rash covering most of my left knee and left elbow, scrapes and bruises in many other places. My right leg might have more issues as it took most of the full force of the blow. An ambulance showed up and they treated my road rash, but I guess because of the adrenalin pumping, I didn't feel any pain in my ankle, leg or back at that time so I didn't think it neccessary to go to the hospital for some road rash, cuts and bruises. However, on my way home, my right leg, just above my ankle swelled up and I could hardly move it, followed by a six inch black bruise that extended half way up my leg (almost to my knee). My back is a bit sore too, but thats probably just from the tumbling. I'll see what the leg looks like in the morning and if I need to I'll go to the ER. Right now the pain is managable.

This could have turned out much worse (for me) but the bike is history....

I was most shocked that the police DID NOT cite the driver of the SUV for running a stop sign. WTF?

Yes, I got her insurance info and a police report. She jumped out of the car saying she was sorry and apologizing left and right... in front of alot of people. Heck she even admitted it to the officers working the scene. Luckily I got the numbers of several people who heard her say it was her fault.

That sucks dude. Definitely hit up the ER, you won't pay for it, so you might as well make damn sure everything is in the correct spots and such.

I'm not sure that they can write citations for things that a police officer didn't see and isn't able to be proven from the accident reconstruction (such as traveling too fast for conditions).

owch! Good thing your ok and sorry about the bike

That was actually how I got into my first (and only) motorcycle accident. A driver ran a stop sign as I was heading through the intersection and railed me. Totaled my bike and broke my right arm and ankle. Sounds like you got off a lot easier than I did

That really sucks. What a beautiful bike to end up in pieces. Be very glad that you didn't get wracked up worse...that you still have the red/black RS2...and that the white/black frames are still available. Insurance is your friend.

This bike was brand new, built Febuary 2nd. I only got 764 miles on her. My other RS2 has 7620 miles on it.

Unfortunately, I'll need over $3000 to get the same bike again...

New frame is $800

Wheelset $1399

Dura-Ace 7900 shifters $500

Selle Italia saddle $165

FSA K-Force carbon handlebars $275.00

Installation of parts to new replacement frame $125.00

important issue is you are realy ok.

I would still get a police report, if they responded there is a report and ask or find out why the driver was not cited as well as a report from the F.D. EMT.

On your bike you will need all receipt invoice information and what cost replacement would be

I would also get an attorney for personal body injuries as down the road there could be problems

I'm shocked, SHOCKED that the authorities did not enforce all pertinent traffic laws in this incident.

Glad you're OK, really.

Now you can get that Cervelo you know you always wanted in the first place.

At a MINIMUM she should have to pay for all medical treatment and your bike. Frankly, I would also try to pursue with the police department why they failed to issue a ticket to the motorist. If you had been in another car or even walking I bet she would have been charged. It sounds like some assumptions where made by the police.

Why didn't you go to the ER right away?

Even if you don't think you need it- it really hurts your case if you end up with a more serious issue that stems from this. Her insurance company will reason that you neglected to seek proper medical attention and might be able to get themselves out of paying for your medical care.

GO TO THE ER TODAY. Trust me.

+1 glad to see you are pretty much ok, but go to the ER today! I have been hit twice so far, both times "minor" but the second time I ended up banging up my knee and lower back but not feeling it for a few days. Again, go to the ER today!

I'd wait just a bit before involving an attorney.

First thing you need to do is go to your personal Doctor ASAP for a complete check over and some X-Rays to make sure you don't have anything broken or seriously injured.

Once that is done, I'd listen to what the drivers Insurance Adjuster has to say before involving an Attorney. Unfortunately, many times an Attorney can get you 25% more than the Insurance Adjuster is offering but it doesn't do you any good if the Attorney gets 30% - 40% of the total settlement.

As someone else suggested. Be sure that you have all of the receipts for the parts and equipment it took to build your bike.

Good luck.

One would think that if she admitted guilt to a police officer, that should be sufficient for filing charges even if an officer did not see the event directly.

I'm glad the accident wasn't worse. Heal quickly, and get back on the road soon!

The police can't cite her for something they didn't witness.

You can, and should, press charges though.

Explain how someone gets charged with dangerous driving then when involved in an accident??

People do get charged with offences when an accident occurs, even if the police did not witness it...

That's silly!
Over here, if I have witnesses I can summons someone for a traffic offence even if a police officer didn't see it...
