Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My large head looks stupid in my helmet

PLease let there be a helmet out there that I can pop on my head with out my wife creasing up in tears of mocking laughter. My head just looks so wrong with my lid.. it perches it's self on top and looks as if it was sized for small children ( note it does technically fit ).

So the big is What out there has the thinnest walls so it doesn't look like I have a bunch of bananas stuck on my bonce.

Iv'e just had a look to see what model mine is and it's a ~Giro 2005 54/61 258grams.

Big thanks if anyone suffering from the same mismatched head to hat ratio with any helmet choices.

All the best

Pics are necessary for useful advice.

All helmets look like that 99% of the time. I have one fortunate friend whose head makes any helmet he puts on look as low-profile as a hairnet. Other than that we all are mushroom-heads when we ride.

I was going to say you need a new wife (j/k of course)
What's more important? Looking good? or keeping that noggin alright in case bad things happen?

I have a big head, and when I wear my red helmet, I look like an idiot. Don't worry about it.

Helmets look less stupid than splattered brain-matter on the road to me.

Thats just the way things are in life. My life fits me, I live, I don't go around killing myself hoping to get another life and expect a really cool lifestyle and be rich. Wait wha?... New wife or new cool wack helmet. If the cookie tastes good, eat it, don't just look at it.

I will admit that I had a Bell Alchera that made me look like I had a giant alien head. One time I was crossing the street and some kids pointed at me and then made giant head gestures and laughed. That's when I got a Sweep-R or whatever it's called and it looks a lot cooler but the ventilation is much, much worse.

This is the price of being stylish.

Stuart Mackenzie: Look at the size of that boy's heed.
Tony Giardino: Shhh!
Stuart Mackenzie: I'm not kidding, it's like an orange on a toothpick.
Tony Giardino: Shhh, you're going to give the boy a complex.
Stuart Mackenzie: Well, that's a huge noggin. That's a virtual planetoid.
Tony Giardino: Shh!
Stuart Mackenzie: Has it's own weather system.
Tony Giardino: Sh, sh, shh.
Stuart Mackenzie: HEAD! MOVE!
Stuart Mackenzie: I'm not kidding, that boy's head is like Sputnik; spherical but quite pointy at parts! Now that was offside, wasn't it? He'll be crying himself to sleep tonight, on his huge pillow.

If you can't look good doing it, don't do it at all.

sell the bike and take up lawn bowling.

(nobody looks good in a helmet)

Looks are not important. What is important is fit..Is it snug..I'd not worry about looks. Probably a big head would look even funnier in a 'bike cap.' And bike caps don't protect the noggin from falls.

A helmet beats the screws and plates on my head because of a cranium fracture look. Or worse, the holes the doctor drilled into my head to alleviate the pressure in my skull from a concussion look.

I use a Ghisallo, a little mushroom-ish but not too bad. If you've got the cash to blow and it fits ok go for the Atmos. I just think the white Atmos looks sweet.

I've got the opposite look going on... small head, HUGE helmet. Mushroom head for sure.

I'm rockin' the Bell Alchera that was referenced above. I don't have $150+ for an atmos or ionos.

big heads are simply exponentially ugly.

a big head requires a big helmet which is far uglier than a smaller helmet. where a smaller helmet is more streamlined and natural looking a bigger helmet causes enhanced mushroom-like visual similarities. even the most attractive helmet (sworks, volt, atmos, sweep, etc) only gets uglier the bigger it is.

Ride faster. That's the only way you're going to look cooler in a bike helmet (maybe).

ZXiMan's experience is mine as well - I looked at every helmet at every shop for like a 20 mile radius and settled on a Specialized helmet. Their whole line actually looks better than anything Bell or Giro make - at least on my melon.
