Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Handlebar diameter

Are the diameter of handlebars different for drop road bars or just the clamp diameters different? THe 31.8mm clamp diameters alsways look thicker right where the stem attaches. Are they any thicker than 25.8 where you grab on the bars?

Diameter may vary by brand and model, but mine are about the same diameter where I grip them.

I'm not sure if the diameter of the bend/drop portion of the bar is standardized, but it is at least similar so that shifters will be assured of fitting. The clamp area as you have noticed is where the distinction in sizing (diameter, not width, reach or depth) comes from.

I think 25.8 isn't an option. It's 31.8 or 26 or 25.4

I would think 31.8 is that thick all the way down, though I haven't used that size.

31.8 bars are not 31.8 their entire length. They are 31.8 where they attach to the stem, then slim down somewhere outboard from that. Shifter clamps wouldn't fit around a bar that was 31.8 at the bend.

There are actually bars and stems that tout a "25.8" clamp diameter....I'm only reaching from memory, but I think ITM lists their stuff as 25.8....but it's basically 26.0 and it is interchangeable. I'd Google it, but I just don't want to!

there's 31.75, 26.4, 26, 25.8, 25.4mm clamp diameters, they all taper down to 24mm where you would put your bar tape and levers.
