Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Questionable Weights?

So I just built up my new s-works sl2.
Looking at published weights of components, frame and a very lenient 1800g wheelset, in total it still registers at 6586g ~ 14.5lbs.

This is what I'm looking at:
1100g 54cm SL2 Frame
2253g SRAM Rival Grouppo
350g SL2 Fork
220g S-Works Seat Post
175g Fizik Antares Saddle
220g 3T Pro Handlebar
150g Ritchey Pro Stem
1800g Just a forgiving number (my Jet 60s Weight in at 1720g)

Total 6586g ~ 14.5 lbs.

MY BIKE does not feel like 14.5 lbs, or even 15.5 lbs, FEELS more like 17 lbs.

How is this possible?

You could always scale your bike. Then you would have an exact number.

There is a lot that goes into a bike that you didn't include on your list. My SL2 weighed about 14 with 1200g tubular wheels, sram red, s-works crank, and zero gravity brakes, and lighter components all around. There is no way your bike would weigh 14.5 with heavier wheels, rival, etc.

Build Total 6230g
Tarmac SL2 team frame (54cm) 985g
Bottom bracket 53g
S-Works carbon crank 369g
130 BCD Spider 75g
Chainrings (53/39) 157g
Derailer hanger 16g
Seatpost binder 22g
Cable guide 7g
Fork (uncut) 366g
less steerer cut off -33g
Bottom bearing 31g

3T Ergosum Team Carbon Handlebar 40mm 205g
3T Doric Limited Carbon Seatpost 27.2x280 150g

Pedals are included @ 317g ultegra pedals, I did forget to list them though, and the bike is sans tape right now

I did omit rim tape, tubes, and tires.

Arn't cables and housing included in a grouppo total weight?

Like the others have stated, you only accounted for a few things. Plus I'm not sure that the weight of the SRAM group includes things like cables, housings, chain. Then add headset, spacers, tubes, tires, bar tape (suprisingly heavy).

I've got a Litespeed Archon the in in the 14lb range and i've got lots of lighter bits than you do, my frame is about 1100g.

tape, tubes, and tires can be almost 2 pounds... cables may or may not be included in the group weight, but probably not. Published weights are usually lower than actual weights anyway. Do you have the s-works cranks or rival cranks?

That is a complete list....
Seat collar, hanger, headset bearings, were included on frame weight. I still feel like 1000+ grams for a few non-descript pieces is a lot to be un-accounted for.

Rival cranks, my one beef with the rival grouppo - I'm not complaining, cheap as can be. I'll be replacing them soon. Thinking Easton EC90 or just a RED crank. Savings of ~100-150 g

I completely stipped my frame and weighed all the parts separately but had about 1100g for the frame weight and about 370 for the uncut fork (about 330 cut agressively). If I add tires, tubes, cables, bar tape, and bottle cages to your list it becomes about 17 pounds. There is a lot of stuff that adds up that you are not accounting for. And even my list as detailed as it is (with actual weights), my bike when I weigh it whole still comes in about slightly heavier than it is on paper.

If tubes and tires really add that much, then I suppose that is where my extra pudge is.
After I trim steerer tube and seat post, replace the Rival Crank that should take off a little flub - Hopefully to an acceptable level.

Anyone know of a cheap 1400g wheelset?

Depends on what you call cheap. Teh best way to go would be a set of hand builts, but you could go with something like American classics, or Neuvation C50 tubulars.

If I add up just the obvious differences between your build and mine:

-735g red/custom group
-70g 3T Doric Limited Carbon Seatpost 27.2x280
-21g Arione CX
-15g 3T Ergosum Team Carbon Handlebar 40mm
-31g 3T ARX Team 100mm 73d
-630g Reynolds + tubulars
-152g Speedplay Zero Ti

Total -1654g (-3.65lbs)

Convinced yet?

When you say "FEELS more like 17" are you weighing it on a scale or just guessing?

As several folks have already pointed out:
1) advertised weight rarely equals advertised weight
2) all of the extra bits (cables, housing, bar tape, bar plugs, even grease) are not 'free'. A lot of little things can add up

And my last point -- you can't be a weight weenie without a proper scale!

Don't forget skewers and spacers and all that fun stuff.

Plus, holding your bike in your hand isn't exactly scientific.

I actually have a digital scale built into my shoulder. That being said it is 17 lbs from a bathroom scale. I don't care enough about the weight to get a scale, just wondering where the extra grams were coming from. Now I know, and knowing is half the battle. Don't do drugs.

Keep in mind the published weights are usually low, often by as much as 10%. Toss in the items you forgot to mention and I can see that easily. Tires and tubes make up a pound right there easily.

Cheap and light must mean you're ok with them falling apart on the second ride.

Lets not forget that when you pump up the tires, you are compressing air into them and thus adding more weight.

Precisely why I never inflate my tires before a race.

Tires ~400g (400 to 600g)
tubes ~150g (120 to 200g)
skewers ~100g (80 to 200g)
headset ??g
pedals ~300g (180 to 350g)
cables and housing ~250g (200 to 300g)

1200g = 2.64 lbs. that gets it close.

Aren't those supposed to be around 1050g? Your tires are 400g each?

The DV46T is 1315g in my spreadsheet. Add two tubular tires at 215 g each, plus glue and skewers (75 g if they're light) and you're up to 1800g.
