Known Problem with 10spd Left Shifter
I picked up a full 105 speced cross bike last year from performance bike. After maybe a week, the left shifter jamed up internally. When it finally broke loose, the ratchet mechanism no longer worked, as in it would move into the big ring when you shift, but since the ratchet mechanism didn't engage, it would just fall back down when the shifter went back to the neutral position. I called up performance, and eventually they sent a new shifter out. Put it all back together, and it worked fine for the next 4 or so months. We yesterday, the exact same thing happened. So I decided to take the shifter apart. Turns out, there is a aluminum "pin" that falls into the ratchet wheel, which locks the barrel into place. Well this pin snapped. Looking at the fracture surface, its a brittle fracture.
Looking online, there are alot of other people that have suffered the same fate with their left shimano 105 10 spd shifter. Has anyone else suffered this with shifters OTHER then 105? I'm going to call up shimano, and if they don't help me, I'll be buying a non 105 shifter.

nope i've only ever seen it on the 105 left shifter as well. strangely enough, this also includes an older 105 shifter from 1993...

No problems at all after a year and a half of hard riding with Ultegra. I have a teammate who's had problems with the left 105 shifter. She upgraded to Ultegra and has not, to my knowledge, had problems since.

It's a setup and operator problem.
The shifter is intended for double or triple use. What's happening is there's just barely enough "slop" or play in the limits and cable tension to allow you to push through into the index for the outer ring on a triple. When you do so, you're stripping out the internal gears/ratchets/prawls.
The instructions for the shifter have very definitive and bold warnings about this...saying DO NOT force the shifter past that point on a double setup as you will basically destroy it.

This is twice now with 105 shifters, and its kinda ridiculous. The one set had nearly no miles on them, and this set has probally less then 700.
I had 2003 Tiagra shifters on my first bike, and never had a problem, even after thousands of miles. My race bike, with DA shifters probably has near 4000 miles on it, and same story, flawless.

Both 105 and Ultegra shifters can be had cheaply on eBay and elsewhere right now. If you keep looking you can probably get a new set of Ultegra shifters for under $150 easily.

If there is enough slop in the mechanism to allow a user to shift past the middle position into the outer position on a double setup (on the double setup, you probably use the middle and bottom indexes, correct?), then that is a design mistake. It means that the internal mechanism of the shifter isn't stiff enough for the intended use, because the outer stop on the derailleur should be enough to stop the mechanism from overrunning the index.

Same thing happened to me exactly with my 105 left shifter. My LBS sent it back to Shimano and I had a new one in about two weeks. They ran out of '08 left shifters so I was sent an '09, which doesn't match.

My left shifter on my Six13 did this...but it was the bike shop that did it.
I installed the new one, and it's been perfect. I was very careful about the setup after figuring out what happened...the bike shop was at a loss.
If this is such a recurring problem, even with the warning, Shimano may want to consider differentiating their double and triple shifters though. That being said, I still love the 105 group and consider it the best "bang for the buck."

I had the exact thing happen with my Giant Defy Alliance. It's in the shop now. Not costing me a thing. Warranty repair. However, I have been without my bike for a week now. Had to take my old flat bar road bike of teh trainer for a ride last Saturday. Otherwise I haven't missed it. It's been cold and wet and the trainer has been just fine!

Update...
Got my bike back last night. Apparently Giant didn't have any 105 shifters laying around. They upgraded me to Ultegra. Can't beat a free upgrade! Gonna test'em out at lunch today.
