What's the deal with "metric" centuries?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

whoopty doo you did a little more than HALF of a real century...

Why? Because you say so?

The world doesn't work that way.

My first metric last summer was a big deal for me. My first century in the fall also was. Now I don't think twice about a metric, and only think briefly about an imperial. The next big deal is a double. I don't have the endurance yet.

Dude; you've been a little bitter in your last two posts. What's up?

Addressing your post matter, there are some people that are happy to accomplish 25 miles on a bike. Remember when you were starting out.

So you wouldn't brag about half marathons or Ironman 70.3's either? After doing a 10K many years ago you can bet your ass I would.

get over it. There are metric centuries out there that are much more demanding than riding a plains 100 miler in a large pack. I suspect the captain is from the flatlands.

I felt like throwing a party the first time I rode 60 miles. It was a big accomplishment for me.

Unless you started your cycling career riding 100 miles the first day, I don't see what is so bothersome.

i did one today, but it certainly wasn't epic. besides the snow in the beginning, and the rain for the rest of it, it was pretty normal.

the reason our rando club did a 100k is that it was a "populaire" - something some wacky french people came up with. this was a ride to get people into doing some kind of distance.

then next weekend we have a 200k. and a few weeks after that a 300k. it really gets interesting around the 400k mark, especially when you throw in multiple mountain passes. and of course the 600, 1000, and 1200k's are insane. (most i've done is a 600)

anyway, the point is that 100km can be a good measuring stick, a good place to start.

the real question is why anyone brags about doing a "real" century. =]

far more people measure distance in km than miles, across the world. If you want to end it, the international standard of measure would be kilometers not miles...

I am not saying sixty miles is not a big deal to some. My first sixty mile ride left me soar for a week.

But I do think that 100 miles IS a big deal.

I feel the word CENTURY should only be used when someone is talking about 100 miles. Adding "metric" takes away the glory of a true century.

10 Wheels: This year I've done 1 REAL centuries, 20 or so 60+ mile rides.

Also screw those Canadains that say they have $100 becuase right now that only $80US?

If you live in a place that uses the metric system I don't get the problem with refering to a 100km ride a century.

By the way what do you care how far someone rides or doesn't?

I think we should stick to both the letter and the spirit of the law and say it's only a century if you ride for 100 years, because THAT's a real century.
