Lemond sizing question

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Lemond sizing question

I found this lemond alpe d'huez on craigslist, the owner doesnt know what size it is. He says the standover height is 30 inches. He also states the top tube is 20" center to center......

So would this probably be a 56cm? I ride a 58cm....

After searching bikepedia, i have found that they were made in 57cm and 59cm. So could i get away with riding a 57cm (if thats what it is)?

The pic makes it look small.
The only way to know if it fits you is to see it in person.
Standover height isn't everything. What's your reach going to be like on the top tube?

Looks like a 55cm to me. Nice bike though. Have him measure from middle of bottom bracket to the top of the seat tube. I believe this is how Lemond does their measurements.

I asked how tall he was and to measure from the bottom bracket to the top of the seat tube.

Damn i wish this was my size, for a 97' model it looks unused...

Probably 53"

My calibrated eyeball says that's a 53" frame. The standover height suggests 53" also.

20" TT c-c is 50.8 cm...the geometry looks standard; perhaps it's a 49~50cm

Here is the geometry chart for Lemond bikes. 30 inch stand over height is 762mm. So I would say it's probably a 53cm frame. I would say it's probably too small for you as I am about your height and ride a 55. But it's worth a test ride.

ditto. I've got a 55 LeMond, and that one's smaller. (The head tube is the key to "sizing by sight.")

Note that it is 55 CM, not inches (")

I'm confused...

If he measured the TT at 20", how can it be a 53? According to the chart it would be a 49...no?

It's definitely smaller than 55. I wouldn't be surprised if it was a 49.

20" = 50.8cm = 508mm

Look at the top tube not effective top tube. Looks like it would be a 51cm by the chart but it appears to be a 53cm from the pics to me.

I think we're splitting hairs as 508 is exactly half-way between the listed 505 and 511 for the 49 & 51cms. In any case it's not a 58 or even a 55.

That's what I have in my Lemond Zurich. Lemonds were manufactured in odd sizes. A 55cm is equivalent to a 56cm in another manufacturer's size. And Lemond road bike geometry is classic road bike geometry and its not a crit frame but an all around road bike.

Oh I didnt even realize it was exactly half way between. I just assumed it was the larger one. My fault, thanks for clearing it up.

I say a 51. My wife has a traditional setup on a Bianchi. The size of that headtube and the distance between the junction of the toptube and the juntion of the downtube and the headtube look about that size.

Lemond sizes there bikes center to center you guys and why many don't get Lemond's geometry which btw don't have long top tubes relative to head tube and sta....just the opposite in fact. OP...that bike is 1-2 sizes too small for somebody 6'1". We are the same height and you should be on a Lemond 57 = 59 c-t-t with more conventional sizing...what I ride.

The simple method of determing the frame size is to measure the head tube length, not including the headset. Any dummy should be able to measure that accurately.
