Passed - Can you Stand it

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Passed - Can you Stand it

Someone passes you or drafts you on your recovery or drill day. Can you resist the temptation to up the tempo and crush them to reassure your ego?

Doing so has sure improved my efforts on the days I choose to work hard!

Oh no!! I'm a slow recoverer. I will need to start a thread to find out what VO2Max, HR and lactic threshold I need to maintain to improve my recovery ride speed.

Thanks

No. Especially when I'm on this and I know I can take them on the hill - I love it:

recovery/easy day: if the pass me, i don't care. if they draft, i slow down, and wave them past.

intervals/sprint/workout days: i ignore them, unless they get in the way.

that said, last night there was a small exception. after doing some mixed intervals with a teammate, we found ourselves riding back into town, with 3 riders sitting on our wheels. we ignored them, and just rode a light tempo.

right before a 'town line' sign (which we had no intention of sprinting for), 2 of the 3 riders jumped. idiots. we decided to give them a little demonstration.

Something doesn't quite comport. I thought you were in the dog house last night playing video games? Good story tho and thanks for sharing.

No problem here, if on a recovery ride I just let them go. And truth be told I ride mainly during the week in the mornings so not many guys out there, can't remember being passed. It's easy coming in first if there's no one to race!

+1 or the more one can do about it. Kind of like racing every car on the road.

The guys I ride with don't know what a recovery day is, they ride the same all the time (about 85% MHR.) On recovery days I just let them go and ride with the non-racer women. Of course, on hard days I drop them like rocks.

Training slow is pro. Means you've got bigger fish to fry. If you're out on a leg loosening Friday evening ride before a relatively important Saturday crit, why chase some bozo who isn't racing? Or, if s/he is, then either you're way outclassed (so why bother) or you'll destroy them tomorrow (so why bother).

What's most entertaining is that you're going slow, they pass you, and they're dying to maintain pace. Eventually you either ride slowly past them or, more likely, they turn off so they can sit up.

I don't think I've ever cared that someone passed me while I was training solo... I've never intentionally pushed harder to try and pass someone either. If it happens, it happens. It's not a race.

Although on my Sunday ride, I did have the pleasure of passing a group of guys twice. I caught up and passed them climbing a hill. I took it easy on the descent and they blew right by me. We hit the next hill and they practically came to a stop... I couldn't help but pass them again.

I've only ever encountered another cyclist once while riding. He passed going the other direction and waved.

Guilty as charged. I still abide by the theory that EVERYTHING is a race (whether they know it or not).

The key is to be completely exhausted before a recovery ride. Even if I wanted to chase I don't have it in me.

I have a regular training partner that I will not ride with on recovery days for this reason. He doesn't know the meaning of slow.
