Overlaying power/speed info on race videos

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Overlaying power/speed info on race videos

This is a question for all you techies. I have video from a helmet cam from a crit I recently did. I also have the power/speed/hr data from that race. I'd like to overlay that data onto the video in real-time.

Any idea how to do this? I can view the second-by-second data as a spreadsheet in WKO+, if that helps.

This will not be easy.

Here are a couple of ideas:

1. Get the data into a text subtitle format and load it in. You will likely have to convert your movie to divx format and use some of the tools available for this. Google divx subtitles how to...

2. Use software that displays your power data in a window on your screen and capture it as a movie. Splice it in using picture-in-picture video editing.

Again, I don't think this will be easy, but I am throwing some ideas out there.

You may want to take a look at VirtualDub. There may be an overlay plugin for it that you can use, if not it should not be hard to rig up with a little bit of programming... You are a student right? You could probably find a cs major somewhere and trade a favor or something.

There might be a dynamic data marquee tool out there (like what the news networks run at the bottom). If you can get that to read from a text file, customize update frequency, and disable scrolling... It's a stretch, but if I wrote one, those are features I'd add...

I like the idea of creating a video of the data though, then setting it up PIP. You or someone you know should be able to whip up a really quick Windows application that will display the power in real time using time data from a .csv. For a windows programmer, that would probably take less than an hour, less than 15 minutes for a really sharp one. Then you just capture it with FRAPS and go PIP.

You might find this old thread interesting because the OP did it and describes how he did it using a Garmin GPS.

I have no advice, but I have to say, a video like you described would be really sweet.

Vision Quest coaching has it as one of their "Real Rides" videos. Very nice IMO.

I think I figured it out! I gave up on the subtitle idea. What I'm trying to do is create an image file of the WKO line-by-line power info for the race, so it will look like the one below, just alot longer. Then, I'll just have that scroll at the bottom of the screen like a marquee. Not as good as actual number, but alot easier I think, and plus it will look cool to see the efforts ahead instead of just the current one.

Any suggestions on how to implement this?
