Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Niobiums: Where from?

Specifically a Nio30/WI-H2/CXRay custom build or the equivalent. What builders/online retailers are folks sourcing these from lately? Interested in hearing about any and all recent experiences. I've been mulling this for about 9 mos now and getting close to pulling a trigger. Also seriously considering just going with the Williams System 30. Thanks!

I recently got the Niobium 27 and CXrays from https://www.likinbikin.com/Products/Rims_Road.html; really nice people, they threw in the nipples for free.

But I built the wheel myself, have you considered that?

Considered it, yes. But it would be my first build. I don't have any of the tools. What hubs did you put in your build?

Rims- IRD Cadence Aero from www.interlocracing.com

Hubs- H2 hubs directly from WI

CXRays- From www.wheelbuilder.com

I got the same set-up, but with Nio19 (IRD Cadence) rims and had them built by the master wrench @ the LBS.

I have not bought from them, but they seem to like the custom build you're after.

Had Mike Garcia build me up a set of Niobium 27s with Hope hubs for ~$500 shipped end of last year. Its my second set of wheels from him and I have no complaints.

I had a set built by White Mountain Wheels, https://www.whitemountainwheels.com/

Easy guy to deal with. The wheels came in the timeframe promised, and were pretty inexpensive. My only complaint is that my 175# lard ass apparently puts out too much torque/power when racing to use alloy nipples in the rear, but I had the rear re-laced with brass and now have no complaints.

I have dealt with both Troy - Ligero and Ron from White Mountain. Both are good guys and know what they are doing. Troy can be hard to get a hold of at times but will stand behind his products. He built me a set of Niobium 30's with cx-rays and WI H1 hubs, I love these wheels. Kept breaking spokes though on the rear, I contacted him and he said could be a bad batch of spokes, I sent him my wheel back and he re-laced and sent back free of charge. No problems since.

Likinbikin.com has a Nio30/DT240s/Aerolite build for $695 at < 1500 gr. Anybody have any experience with this build or with buying a complete wheelset from these guys? I've traded email with them and they are very responsive and seem to know what they're doing. Thanks.

I just built the front so far, Chris King hub.

This was my first build too, the only tool I needed was the spoke wrench, I turned the bike upside down and used the front fork for the truing stand. In retrospect, proper tools would have made it easier, especially IRT dish.
