Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

good $50 road pedals?

I am getting a CAAD9-6, first real road bike, and I am wondering what your favorites are. I was looking on nashbar and the Look Keo knockoffs seemed decent, but I have no idea.
input please and thankyou

Hit up Ebay for some Shimano SPD 105 pedals.
I have the ultegra version, great pedals for the price (theyre virtually identical aside from weight)

Look Keo Classic for $55 https://www.probikekit.com/display.php?code=A6014
Or, go SPD. SPD 520 for $39 https://www.probikekit.com/display.php?code=NP07526

I use both systems - SPD for cross bike, and Look Keo on road bikes. I prefer biking in the Look's, but the SPD is definitely more convenient since you can basically walk in the shows with the cleats.

I think your exchange rate is a little off, I am getting $63 for the Looks. I like them though.

hmm, that is peculiar. I clicked the little american flag at the top and found the pedals again and it does say $55.30. The link you sent pulled up the British version, and it said like 44 pounds or something, which google converted to $63. Not complaining. haha

If you don't have a problem with used equip., I'd go with Keo Sprints. The Elle (for women) version will probably be cheaper.

I went with Keo Sprints (Elle) on craigslist for $35, then bought the Carbon Keos the next year for $120. Both were brand new and came with cleats. FYI I'm a guy and could have cared less about the color of the Elle Keos. I later sold the Elle Keos to another guy for the same price I bought them for.

Shouldn't be too much of a difference between Look and Shimano pedals in terms of performance. I just preferred the Look pedals because I had used them before and liked them.

The newest Shimano pedals are probably a bit more durable the the Looks.

Just make sure to never ever buy the keo Grip cleats, because you will be going back to buy some of the regular ones in a week.

I would pick up either the Shimano 105s or Look Keo Classics for $55 from PBK. I only have experience with the 105s of those two...they're great.

The British version shows you the price including taxes. Since you're ordering from overseas, the VAT (value added tax) does not apply to you - hence the lower price.

I like my SPD-SL's they are like 35 bucks on PBK. A question for those that use the 105 or ultegra pedals, are they simply lighter or easier to clip in to?

Are the 105's better because they are wider? The weight difference is minimal, between the spd-sl r540's.

+1 for the 105's.
They're on my CAAD9 5 and I love em.
The little extra cash is well spent.

I brought my R540's back when i got my 105's from PBK. so much nicer clipping and the wider base is nice too

try to use the USABAR or whatever 5% off code and it'll probably shove it closer to the 50 mark

This year I bought 2 pair of the Nashbar Ventoux 2's (Look Delta). They work great however I should have spent more and bought 2 pairs of Speedplay Light Actions. I dont like having to look down to find the pedal and clip in. Im new to clipless and I have to concentrate far too much coming up to stops and intersections to both clip in and clip out. That takes away from the fun of the ride. And yes I crashed going slow (on my all weather steelie) ..even though I rode all winter on my rollers with cleats. That does not prepare you for real world riding. Ive considered going back to toe clips and straps but then I would not be able to use the cycling shoes I have. Cycling shoes stop my feet from bending due to their stiff soles. I used to have pain occasionally from this.

Yes, they're wider. See my thread on the R540 for people's opinions on why the newer 105s are better.
