Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

back tire feels like it's slipping ?

Is there anything else to worry about with the back tire slipping?

I have 100psi in my tires. I don't know if it's only when I ride through small groves in the rode but it feels like the back is slipping out from underneath me. My buddy was riding behind me and noticed it, he asked if I was skidding, I told him I wasn't sure but it sure made me nervous.

The roads were dry and clean so I'm not sure what's happening. I checked my back tire, the quick release is tight, the tire is mounted on the rim properly. Any ideas?

well...you did not mention if it is a new tire...or something new happening to an old tire...occasionally they do "slip" on gravel but should not be constant.

maybe a bad hub? or the tire is spinning on the rim. although you should be able to tell if its a bad hub, it'd just feel like your peadling nothing. What kind of tires and rims are you running? maybe they need to be glued or aren't seating well

Sounds like it could be a problem with spoke tension. Are there any spokes that feel like they have less tension than their adjacent spokes?

I have Mavic SL rims, with Dura hubs. I have Specialized Armadillo tires. They are brand new tires, not sure if this makes a difference. They are still at 100 psi. The spokes look fine, rear triangle seems fine no cracks. The back wheel quick release is tight.

I stopped riding and tried to steady the frame then purposely move the tire side to side but could not make it move. It only happens when I'm riding in a straight line.

I'm just wondering, it feels like when you're driving your car and you hit a wet patch or oil patch in the road and it skids/wiggles left-to-right really fast then straightens back out. Very nerve-racking.

New tires sometimes have a coating that can be a little slick, but losing traction while seated and traveling in a straight line is highly unusual. Was this seated or sprinting? If it was sprinting maybe you are putting to much weight over the handlebars. It could be the freehub skipping, but probably not because that would tend to be a more of a mechanical feel to it.

A co-worker had a similar issue, ended up being that the seat/chain stay joint was cracked on the drive side. You really couldn't couldn't see it until the wheel and deraileur were off and it didn't show up unless it was under load. The LBS finally found it during his spring tune-up. Specialized warrantied the frame.
