Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Sigma Computers

Do Sigma Cyclocomputers have an automatic switch on feature when you start moving?

Auto start/stop (if thats what you mean) is on most all bike computers. Its on the last two Cateyes I had and on a Vetta. Only the cheapest ones don't have it.

Wait, you're saying each time you stop and get going again, you have to touch a button for it to start up again? That is weird. None of my computers do that, including my Sigma. (which is the base model, cheapest one they make).

Not sure if this is true of all wireless computers but generally it's easier to keep a wired computer on a low power standby mode that is woken up by a pulse from the wheel sensor. With a wireless computer the receiver would have to run constantly looking for a signal from the transmitter. The Sigma will go to sleep after 5min of no activity and require a button press to wake up its receiver. Not a problem for short stops but after a coffee stop you'll need to press a button.

The Sigmas have an auto start stop, unless you stop for more than 5 min. If you stop for more that 5 min you must then punch any button to turn in back on.

My Sigma MHR 2006 starts and stops automatically regardless of how long it's been sitting.

If you did have the option to change it, you'd be replacing your batteries once a week as the radios kept talking to each other over night. You'll get used to just hitting a button as you take off.

My VDO goes to sleep after 30 minutes of 0mph and you have to hit a button to wake it up pre-ride.

Ya I have the 1606L DTS + cadence and have to hit a button pre-ride to wake it up. Same for the 1106 on the wife's.

No, not each time you stop and start (say at intersections). It starts again automatically then.

I thought the OP was talking about when you first get on the bike ( I may be wrong). Some cyclocomputers do start automatically then, my Sigma certainly doesn't, and sounds like lots of other posters' don't as well.

Wired computers tend to do this, wireless don't.

i have a wired BC 906. whenever i start riding, it turns on w/ the mph display etc. A while after you stop, it goes into a kind of sleep mode, where it just says "BC 906" and the time.

OK with so many mixed responses I contacted Sigma and this is what they stated "Our wireless computers require a button to be hit to “wake up” before riding. This is a safety feature so the battery isn’t constantly searching for signals. Our wired computers will sense a wheel turning and do not require a button to be pushed to start."

From the horses mouth - Wireless hit a button, wired auto start.....
