Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I take a bike when I travel for work so will ride in Vancouver, Calgary, Phoenix, Lake Tahoe, Boston, NYC, So. Cal, Peru, Barbados, Dublin IR. and Cambridge UK. I am also doing the Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary RTCC rides this year and will ride Vancouver to Kamloops in June. There will no doubt be others I don't know about yet.

trip

After winter sets in (I live close to Toronto) I would love to travel somewhere in the southeast US where it's just warm enough to ride with shorts/shirt (would bring cold-weather gear, but would love if I didn't have to use it).

I've never travelled with the bike before, so I'm considering driving down (with a friend or two), or flying (perhaps with the family...). Kind of stressful to consider a drive down there that may involve winter conditions on the way, or via plane and having to think of packing the bike, extra costs, etc. I'm envious of those who travel with their bike!

I did my 3-week bike tour around Colorado - it was cool that we did it door-to-door.

Noonievut, you might want to consider southWEST USA for a winter tour, it's a lot drier. Southern California / Arizona sort of thing. I travelled in the southeast a few years ago in Nov/Dec and had a lot of rain.

Once you've done it a couple times, it's not a big deal. Just remember:

1) Always check the airline policies regarding baggage (you can do this online) a day or two before you fly, because airlines change their policies now and then.

2) Relax, smile, and be friendly to everyone through the whole process.

How was Bali? How are bike rentals there? Do you need to bring your own, or are there quality touring bikes to be had?

heading to santa monica mtns above malibu on tuesday. it's only 2.5 hrs away but still, getting a hotel room to pursue it over 2 days.

still planning on hitting zion national park again in april at some point and also doing some road riding in the surrounding area as well.

and in june/early july the trip i'm really looking forward to-hwy 67 in arizona from jacob's lake to the north rim of the grand canyon and back. about 108 miles.
hwy 67 is reputed to be the prettiest in arizona and that's saying something.

dont think it'll happen this year but would love to cycle yosemite valley again along with a climb of tioga pass and a loop ride of nearby june lake area.

Headed to San Diego in July for six days of solo touring. As mapped out, it should be 19,974 feet of climbing. Shipping the bike out ahead of time.

I'd like to ride in Montreal. The highest rated bicycle friendly city for last decade in North America. Might be fun to ride up Mount Royal a few times since it's the only hill I know of in the North East that's paved and not too wimpy. It was last I remember a 13-14km run up.

We're planning a trip to South Dakota/Wyoming in mid September. My wife isn't the cycling nut I am and she hates hills, but I'm having us bring the bikes anyway and I hope to do some climbing out in the badlands.

Heading up to Alaska to ride in the Great Alaska Double Century which is done in conjunction with the Fireweed 400.
Fireweed | The Race Across Alaska

Last September I vacationed in Alaska and road in the Anchorage Bike MS. Folks I met during that ride invited me to come back in the summer so of course I had to take them up on it.

Spent a week on the Riviera with family and rented a bike (Trek Domane 4.3) for four days. Nice rides, highlight was the Route de Crete on the west side of the Gorge de Verdon. Going down there again for two weeks around 1. of October and will bring my own bike then.

On our family cruise to Alaska, I rented a road bike in Skagway, put my passport in a ziploc bag, and rode up the Klondike Highway through the White Pass (sign said "Summit Elevation 3292"). The popular cruise ship excursion is to take the train, but the ride up the highway was *awesome*, as was the descent. Going through the US Customs border crossing on a bike was a first for me.

Heading to the west coast of North America in just a few weeks! Mainly Canada, of course, but a little side trip down to Oregon.
