Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Edit: Just saw you are 17. In your case; drop out.

Can you cycle to school? That would give you daily shorter rides, which would help build time in the saddle. Check your local bike shop to see if there is a cycling club that you can ride with. Cycling clubs generally have different rides of different distances and paces, so you might find a group that fits your needs.

Take your days off, or out of school (whatever the case may be), and ride, ride, and ride some more. Your body will scream at you for a while, but the more you do it, the more you will be able to do it comfortably.

Sounds like you're already off to a good start if you can ride 60 miles in one ride.

Go with someone you know, or join the bike club at your HS.
If your HS doesn't have one, start one.

Riding with a partner/group is easier than riding solo both mentally and physically, and often allows you to put more miles in.

Simple ride 5 times a week 20 miles each or some varient of that (maybe 3 30-40 mile rides)

Best thing to do is find group rides by you that meet on a regular basic. The fact that they are set in stone instead of at your leasure makes it more likely that you'll go to it.

60 miles in a ride or in a week? It is commonly accepted that 10% increase in volume per week is reasonable.

What's a good amount? It's all over the place I'm sure... I do about 300/week.

Ride whenever you have 2 hours + in front of you.

Join a club to participate in longer rides and come back even if you get dropped.

Talk your friends into getting bikes or going on rides - no better way to get around and know the town. Or if social biking doesn't work, look at what the competitive swimmers and runners do: get up at the crack of dawn and put in an hour or two before any other responsibilities interfere.

I ride to work every day myself and pedal through lunch if I get one, and head for the hills every weekend. I wind up with about 150 miles a week. When I was your age I trained to race, and did 300-400 miles a week when I was out of school.

On a weekend when you have a free day, ride 100 miles. It's not as hard as it sounds.

Your out of school around 3pm right? You have about 4 hours of daylight left. I try and do 65 mile rides back to back on my days off, I lead a group ride on Sundays (30ish miles), and Mondays I work later in the afternoon so I can ride and pull about 50 miles. That's 200 miles a week without trying very hard.

Just start riding more. Gradually increase your distances.

If you're already managing 60 miles a day, it isn't that much of a leap to do a full century ... go do one this weekend.

As for tips, here are a few: https://www.machka.net/century.htm

Joining a club (in my opinion) is the best way to increase miles per ride. I rarely ride over 25-35mi solo, but don't have any second thoughts about 60-70 with the club. If you just want more miles period, if you can stand up straight, it's not pitch black or the middle of a thunderstorm outside (or rush-hour depending on your location) - then RIDE.

just ride the bike. if you have 2 hours to watch a movie, you have 2 hours to ride the bike.

and being in high school, you have nothing but time home slice.
