Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Easter Weekend Rides

Have you got any exciting rides planned for the Easter weekend?

I've got 4 days off, and first and foremost I'm planning to catch up on my rest (zzzzzzzzzzz) ....... but I'm debating about my cycling plans. In a way I'd like to get into the mountains, but the weather doesn't look all that wonderful on Friday (quite cool with thunderstorms). I'll have to think about Saturday or Monday maybe. Otherwise I'd like to get out for some decent distances locally this weekend. I haven't ridden the routes I'm thinking of in about 6 months. It would be nice to see them again.

And I desperately need to clean my bicycle.

How about you?

I'll see you there, I'm assuming your doing 4/5?

It's a great course but definitely will put the hurt on the 5's.

I'll be wearing a PAA/REMAX kit, red trek, bright orange Oakley's, don't hesitate to say hi!

I hope to do some climbing tomorrow and Sunday. Today is my last ski day this week (been at Breckenridge all week), but heading back to Denver tonight. It is pretty warm up here, so I am sure the foothills will be rideable.

Just got back from a 56 mile solo ride, did some good climbs, did some good speedwork. I also got out to the Manhattan Beach GP course and played on some of the hills, god damn I see why they say that's one of the hardest crits in the country.

Just got back from a lovely 47 km ride. I will have to post pics momentarily.

The weather was gorgeous out there ... +15C, sunny, hardly any wind at all.

OK, here are the pics. There's still a bit of snow out there, but the roads are good.

I'm gonna be decked out in Capo on the side of the road with red Oakley's and a good ole CAAD9.

definitely not ready for this race quite yet but I'm going to do a ton of races this year.

I'll look for you and prepare a nice awkward introduction.

I'd been riding the Saturday morning no-drop ride at the local bike shop, but have been busy on other (cycling) stuff and missed it about 5 times in a row now. But, I'll be there tomorrow. Be doing something Sunday afternoon, too, haven't decided what- some sort of local riding, nothing grand.

(edit)- just checked and they're not having the Saturday ride this Saturday. Argh. Wish I'd know that before, I would have planned something different.

You'll do fine, it's a fast if you're a five in my opinion but when I raced it UMD was also racing the 4/5 and he told me it was one of the slowest crits he had done lol. I got pretty burned when I did it and had to have a team mate pull me back up into the pack a few times I was tail gunnin' it a few times.

I'm stoked this is technically my first race as a 4.

Hahah yeah I haven't had time to train at all til 3 weeks ago due to school and work. I was planning to wait til next year and be all super duper but this is probably the best experience I can get.

I've only done a few group rides. Ass kicking inbound. At least my Capo jersey and Radars came today so I'll look kinda stylin'.
After all... Isn't that was cycling's all about?

Just try to relax find a wheel and hold on, don't waste energy when you don't have to and it will be over before you know it. I will say keep an eye out for people crossing wheels, on my first few races I spent all my concentration just trying to avoid grabbing onto sketchy guy's wheels.

Yeah I'm just going to look for someone who can hold their line and suck wheel like Danika Patrick. I just want to avoid the super noobie 5 guys as much as possible, unfortunately, I'm one of them! I'm not going to attack really, I just want to make sure I don't fall behind someone that gives out after 15 minutes.

Gotta shave tomorrow

Haven't shaved since swim season =[ I was just growing hair down there too!

Two days into the Easter break and I've done about 200km so far. Hard km too, fast and hilly.Planned another 70km ride for tomorrow but it's looking doubtful at this stage because it's pouring rain.

I was supposed to go on my 20 mile no-drop ride this morning, but they weren't riding. Sometime back, I had the idea of riding completely around Lake Ray Hubbard, so I went ahead and did that instead. 55.5 miles total. Probably 80% or more of the route, I had been on before at various different times, but never had connected the pieces.

I've been watching them build this water tower up in north Garland. They've got the concrete topped out now, and are about ready to start on the steel tank part.

I love old buildings like this. Up by Wylie.

I rode along the shoulder of Hwy 78 for a couple of miles.

Coming back down FM 205, I saw this winery and vineyard.

The house right across from it had bluebonnets out front.

I got down to Rockwall, and rode through the Arby's drivethrough. Got a large Mountain Dew and regular roast beef sandwich, rode around to a shade tree and sat down and ate.

A couple of years ago, I took some photos for a website of Chandler's Landing Cemetery. It was all run down then, but I got an email that they had fixed it all up, so I stopped there and took some newer pictures.

I stopped by the old Heath Cemetery, too. I've heard my dad tell about when he was a kid, they didn't have lawnmowers, and most of the people in town would just have bare dirt yards, which they hoed periodically. The cemeteries were worked kind of the same way, and periodically, they'd have a work day and everyone would go hoe down all the weeds in the cemetery. The Heath Cemetery is one of the few that is maintained that way today.

By the way, Barnes Bridge Road is a popular bicycling route in this area, and the Mr. Barnes who ran the bridge is buried here. There's a historical marker about him.

Just 24 solo miles yesterday and 21 today. Time has been tight this week but I did manage to get in 175 miles and 3 group rides this week. I'm finally finishing with the group and even there for the sprint at the end.

No riding this weekend at all.

Spent today teaching my fiancee to drive, tomorrow is all eastery stuff. No time off from work and I have to save my one vacation day I've got so that I can take a romantic holiday down to the DMV and register a car soon.

Might be able to get on the turbo tonight.
