Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Best Site for Whole Groupsets

I own an 08 Giant OCR w/Sora components that I am thinking about upgrading. The frame on the bike is sturdy, and the geometry of the bike is perfect for me. I want to upgrade to SRAM Rival or Campy Veloce 10spd from my current 8 spd. I've checked out Nashbar and Performance Bike and eBay, but prices seem to vary wildly.

Where is the best place to find entire groupsets incl shifters, derailleurs, crankset, BB, etc etc etc?

Do you think my current frame is worth upgrading the drivetrain?

Also, would my current crankset be compatible with SRAM or Campy?

crankset should come with a groupset.

you have to keep shopping around online and the above two mentioned sites are good places to start.

personally i would keep your current bike as is for a rain, bad weather, back-up bike, and buy something complete. you will have to replace essentially EVERYTHING on the bike to go to campy, including the wheel hubs.

While I've thought about replacing the whole bike, I've noticed that there are few bikes that come with Campy or SRAM below $2500. I've seen some groupsets for as little as $700, which would give me a good drivetrain on a decent frame for less than 1400.

yea, i can see the motivation, i was thinking of doing the same with my SORA equipped via narone, which i love the geometry of, and what i really want is campy, but the scope is staggering.

if you are set on doing this, i would stick to scram if i were you, it will definitely be easier...

If you plan on keeping the bike for the long term and it's one which you're completely happy with and comfortable on then it's worth it. If you're concerned about its worth in terms of re-sale value then the component group will help you out some, but that can be hit or miss since some people prefer good components on higher end bikes. A switch to Campy will mean a complete overhaul as AngryScientist mentioned, and Campy is more expensive than its Shimano and SRAM counterparts. I really like Campy but the higher end groups are pretty expensive which is what's pushing me toward SRAM as an alternative.

OP, also take a look at the 2009 alloy Campy Centaur stuff (vs Veloce).
Really good price and all of the functionality of its carbon sibling.

So if I went SRAM, I could keep my hubs because they're interchangeable w/Shimano. What about my crankset? Would I need a specific SRAM crankset, or could I go with a cheaper FSA?

x2 for ribble. <$1400 for Record. Had it as low as $1000 for Chorus. Never looked at Veloce, but I bet it's good

Shimano 10 speed works almost flawlessly with SRAM. You could do an FSA crank as well if you really wanted to, but I'd go with either SRAM or Shimano if that is the way you are leaning.

HOLY CRAP! Configured an 09 Veloce group INCLUDING new wheels w/Campy hubs for $624 delivered @ Ribble!! Previously, I hadn't been able to find a Campy group for near that price, let alone with wheels and delivery for the lot. Thanks for the link, SushiJoe.

Just to throw it out there, don't forget to include shipping (which it looks like you did) and/or import duties (if applicable). It may not apply, but when looking overseas don't forget to consider those costs.

No problem! I've bought from them a couple times now. Always a smooth transaction.
Plus saving money is what all the cool kids are doing.

Hi Dr. Pete,

I've yet to personally get charged any duties/import fees. I also think Ribble has free shipping to the US over a certain amount, but I could be mistaken. Either way, they've got some killer prices on Campy.

I always throw in that caveat, having bought a pair of Fulcrum Racing 1's from the former 11speed.com, and getting the bill from UPS a week later for $107 in customs fees. Ended up being the same price as buying from another shop in the US.

The best deal I have found on Sram Rival is here https://www.ebikestop.com/sram_rival_...SRAM-Rival.php .

I have never purchased from them so I have no idea about how good of a company they are.

You can go with an FSA just make sure to check the specs, but it should be fine. I have an FSA crankset and use it with Shimano, some people prefer to keep a gruppo all one brand especially the drivetrain since minor differences can affect shifting but I don't think it will be a problem.

There were reports by quite a few members regarding fraudulent charges shortly after using some of the sites in the UK, and while it might not be the fault of those companies, I would recommend getting a one time purchase card from your credit card company if you do buy from Ribble.

Texas Cyclesport is the best in the U.S. and their prices are good.

Probike kit is another good one but they are not in the U.S. and their delivery is slow.

Yup - I've since avoided overseas purchases, including PBK due to the customs fees and / or credit card foreign exchange fees, which pretty much eat up the difference.

Try BlueSkyCycling in The States.
And of course, the Brits (PBK, Merlin, ChainReactionCycles, etc...).
