Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Brake pads for both aluminum and carbon?

I train on aluminum clinchers, but will be racing on carbon tubulars. I know that in general, you want to be careful not to use brake pads that have any metal bits embedded in them on a carbon rim. But I was wondering if there's a good brake pad out there I can use to share between the two sets.

It looks like the Zipp Carbon/Carbon pad is a possible solution, at least based on their website it says you can use it on either type of surface.

Anyone else doing double duty with the same set of brake pads (zipp brand or other)?

Using pads that have been used for aluminum wheels may void your warranty. I know of a carbon rim maker that asks you to send your brake pads in if you warranty a rim.

If you have Shimano its super easy to swap pads.

I use Zipp pads for Al clinchers and carbon tubulars. I talked to the Zipp rep and they say it's fine. Nonetheless, I try to inspect the pads for any Al shards when switching out.

I've worn through one set of tubulars so far with no unusual wear on the carbon rims.

If your concerned about warranty, and they're not Zipp wheels, I'd check with the manufacturer.

Yup. They're awesome.

Although, as others have said, I've heard tales of little shards of aluminum getting stuck in the pads and scratching up the carbon wheels when you put them in. This is true of any dual-use pad that I know of.

Now that I save the fancy wheels for tri's and I'm doing them less frequently, I just change the pads when I put on my sunday best.

Thanks for the replies. Yeah I'd definitely inspect the pads each time, maybe even run an emory board over them just to be sure before putting the carbon rims on the bike.
