Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What's on your ipod?

OK, I poked around a bit and couldn't find a thread like this, so I hope it hasn't been done already. What songs seem to work well in different situations? This occurred to me today as I was grinding it out into a headwind and "Bad Luck" by Social Distortion came on and worked really well. Also, "Paranoid" by Sabbath is great hammering with the wind at your back. Suggestions?

Well, I have 50,000 songs and counting on my harddrives. I have everything from Jim Carrol Band (people who died) which is a great song to descend to on my MP3 player. Echo and the Bunnymen's the killing moon is awesome at 6am riding around the resevoir.
Adam and the Ants, Stand and Deliver is also good to climb to. Death is Vegas, Dirt is banging.
Airborne Toxic Event, Gomez, The Clash, Pearl Jam, Peaches. And so on.

Not always music, although something like Juno Reactor or Apocalyptica are good for those hair raising descents.

For long rides I sometimes go with audio books (because reading while I ride is hard) right now I have The Count of Monte Cristo and Robinson Crusoe loaded.

I had the Sansa....kept freezing up on me....it sucked out loud (at least mine did). I now have an 8GB iPod Nano and I love it. The 4th gen iPod blows away the audio quality of any personal MP3 player I have ever heard. I am using Koss Sparkplug earbuds as well....awesome. I have alot of music in mine...lots of blues, classical, classic rock, and jazz. I would say that the artists I have the most of are Steely Dan, Spyro Gyra, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Earth Wind and Fire and a GREAT Canadian band from Newfoundland called Great Big Sea.

Cheers,

Brian J.

I don't own an iPod.

I do have a 1Gb Creative Zen Stone though, which I love. Mostly I just use the radio on my cellphone though.

I've read and posted to a few threads like this. I'm always amused that I have heard of very few of the groups / songs listed. My musical choices are Classic Rock, before the 80's, and Big Band. Even stranger, I seem to to be the only one who (or will admit to) listens to talk shows.

I always thought you weren't supposed to listen to music (or anything through headphones) while riding your bike. Doesn't that hinder your ability to hear cars coming up on you or possibly other things around you that you have to be aware of?

Not at all. I either don't turn up the volume that loud, or I just wear my earplug only on the right side.

There has been a lot of discussion on this. Some people think it's a safety hazard and others don't. Most people, including me, who ride with an IPOD use just the right headphone in order to leave the left ear open for road sounds.

+100 for Great Big Sea. Their concerts are great, too.
