Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Novice Question

Hello Board Members!!

Brief intro here:

Very new to the sport (Girlfriend and I) picked up our bikes last year. I have a Cervelo soloist (aluminum).... I really like the bike and seem to be quite comfy on it. After a year on the bike, I have decided to upgrade to a carbon bike.

I just purchased a Felt F3. Really excited about this bike (the GF is too, as she will get my Cervelo!!). Here is the question.

I had a friend tell me to scrap the sram chain, and use a dura-ace chain. He likes the 'sram red' except the chain..... now I feel a bit nervous. He seems to think the first time I stand on the pedals I will go over as the chain WILL break.

Is there any truth to this? Can a dura-ace chain be used with the red group without any compromise? Thank you for all the help!

I don't think you have to worry about snapping the chaina any more than any other chain. My only complaint was that it was rather noisy. I use KMC now and it is better but people seem to be happy with DA chains as well. Yes, they are compatible.

I'm thinking "penus envy". You got a new bike so he had to find something wrong with it.

You've already got the chain. Use it. Decide for yourself if you don't like it.

Lads,

Perhaps I should be a bit more clear....

I would not know the difference between a DA chain or any other for that matter. Is there any truth to this story that sram chains are MORE prone to break than any other? I'm about 6'4" and around 185lbs. Very new to sport, and I feel I only 'stand' on the pedals whilst in a steep climb. I just don't want to go over because of a broken chain.....

I'm not looking for a performance difference, rather a safety/ strength issue. Hope this helps.

OK, I was joking before (Fabian Cancellara's SRAM Red chain broke during the Ronde van Vlanderen this year). But aside from Fabian's mishap, what is your friend basing his condemnation of SRAM chains on?

I don't think I'd worry about it....

Red is SRAM's flagship groupo, so I don't think you have to worry about the chain breaking.

If you're this new to the sport, you won't be putting out enough power to do that kind of damage...

Retro is probably right, your friend is probably just jealous. I don't blame him

This is a guy that I met about a year ago, seems to be a serious rider and reader of the sport. I was told by him that more than one sram chain has broken. As I said, I am totally new to this... he does have me a bit spooked however.

He does like the 'red'.... he just told me to switch out the chain so I don't have to worry about it. By the way... I do not yet have the bike.... should be in this week!!

I really doubt you stand any chance of breaking the chain, had it been something common it probably would have been recalled especially a chain from one of the three main component makers.
