Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Need advise on bike-day in Austin, Tx--Family Vacation

Seeking Help and suggestions :

I'm planning a trip to Austin, Tx on 20th of May through the Memorial Day [25th]. My wife and I are looking for a shop or a organized planner that we can have a day trip on a road bike. [we will leave the kids with relatives ]

Since I'm traveling with two small children, I have no plan to bring our bikes. I was hoping BFers in Austin can give us some advise to find a place where they offer a day tour-bike-ride or a shop where I can rent good/decent road bikes [of course, that mean I have to find the way to go around places to ride].

Also since I'm planning to be there for few days, I was hoping I can visit some places related to road bikes i.e. Lance's shop, and I believe there is a BF guy who builds custom wheels.

Much appreciate in advance.

You might also check the Texas forum.

Lance's store is not real huge, didn't take me too long to look around there.

I know that Bicycle Sport Shop rents out road bikes...not cheap, see rentals here Mellow Johnny's also has road bike rentals, perhaps a tad more reasonably priced, see here. One of the local REI -- there are two -- might rent road bikes as well.

As for guided tours...I'm not familiar with any, but, I suspect they exist...a good alternative might be going on a scheduled ride with locals on either Saturday or Sunday...there are lots of group rides around...pace can vary from slow/moderate to you'll-know-where-you-stand-fast...for example, check out bicycle sport shop, jack and adams, mellow johnny's, violet crown (my team)...

I'm not sure who is the custom wheel builder, but, I'm curious to find out.

Thank you Bostongarden.

Btw, I will be staying in the zip code 78739. Wonder if that will help to get better suggestions.

Also should I cut & paste this post to the Texas Forum or Can the MOD help?
Much appreciate.

Again thanks BostonGarden and Wanders.
