Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Aksium vs. Ultegra/OP for training and cross

I'm in need of a training wheelset that I'll hopefully be using for some cross riding and racing in the fall. Both are similar in weight and price. Any comments on durability? I'd probably get the mp3 protection on the mavics. The ultegra/open pros would be more easily serviced, but if i go with the aksiums, they'd be covered even if i trash them.

Any opinions either way?

Kona specs Aksiums on its Jake the Snake CX bike, FWIW. I just traded up on road wheels so the stock Aksiums went on my son's CX bike.

Never hear anything bad about OP/Ultegra.

Nice thing about 36 spokes is that if you break one, you can finish your ride with next to no problems. However, if you are serious about cross, I would counsel you to buy some tubulars instead because they are brilliant for cross.
