Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Beginner to Buying, Searching on Craig's List

I'm a little new to cycling, but I love it and have invested SOME time into learning things. What are the bikes to look out for when spending up to $500 for a bike? What about $1,000? I currently have a 1987 Trek LeTour, which I'm okay with, but wouldn't mind trading up for something a little lighter and a little easier to ride. Any suggestions?

Bianchi? Serotta? Trek?

What are the big "phrases" or characteristics to look out for? What should I stay away from?

If it seems unbeliveable it probably is. If you see a full carbon bike for $500 there is somthing wrong here. probably a crack in the frame. I would look for aluminum. qbike is a better site, it compares all the used bike websites based on price or brand, you can even search for a particular model

The fundamental problem that a beginner has is an unfamiliarity with value, brands, and condition. I bought my wife from Craigslist a virtually brand-new Jamis Coda Comp for $425. It was a steal at that price. The seller had problems getting buyers to look at it. Why? Very few shoppers for such a bike would have any idea of who Jamis is. Their idea of a great comfort bike would be one of those balloon tired cruisers or a brand name like Trek.

Giant is also an affordable brand if you're looking for value.

do you 100% know the proper size bike that you need?

also, you won't find many good deals if you are in the DC area. our CL is pretty inflated for bikes.

If you're still cool with your Trek, I say take it slow, read the mags and hit up the bike shops. Good shops will have people willing to talk things through rather than trying to sell you something. Helps to go at an off time - not Saturday morning for instance. 2¢

Or it's stolen.
