Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Solo for me...I don't know anyone who is fast enough to ride with me (not that I'm fast, just that I ride a few times a week and the people I know ride a few times a year). I'm sure if I met someone who was a somewhat srs cyclist they would tear my legs off. It's probably pretty difficult to find someone close to your level, though I think it would be great if the person were just a little bit faster than me.

When I climb with someone I am very shortly climbing alone regardless.

Both.

BTW, riding with others doesn't always mean a paceline. Sometimes it looks more like an after dinner stroll, with people mixing it up in small groups, chatting.

Both. I like the Wednesday ride and when I find a good partner on a randonnee.

Touring though, I definitely prefer my own company. I usually agree where to go.

For me the big problem with groups is all the chatter, or maybe I'm just antisocial. When I ride alone I prefer to be by myself.

Alone. It's my time to exercise and get away from everything and clear my head.

Most of my rides are solo for logistical reasons. However, riding with a group is so much more fun.

I think I went to high school with her. And she was somewhat standoffish.

I actually like riding with other people, but nobody is ever going the same place the same speed at the same time, so much of my riding is solo. I like riding some of the charity rides, and do a Saturday morning non-drop ride that is slow enough I can keep up most of the time.

It's been 24 years since I last rode with anyone. Bob -- did you ever make it home?

In theory I would probably enjoy a small group ride. I like riding in a group (not so much a "paceline" really.)

One problem is that most of them on the weekend only go about 50 miles or so and I usually like to go farther when I get a chance.

That's why I sign up for as many metric and full century rides as possible. I get the "group experience" several times a year, but then I can toodle along by myself the rest of the time.
