Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Tire Recommendation

I am in the market for a new set of tires and need some recommendations/comments on the possible choices. I will be racing on them along with being used on normal training rides. Roads are in fairly good condition around were I live, but still some gravel in spots.

- Vittoria Open Corsa Evo KS
- Continental Grand Prix 4000
- Michelin Pro 3 Race

Any comments on side wall issues, low millage wear, ect? Any other suggestions on tires to look at?

Add Vredestein Fortezza Tricomp to your list, then put it at the top.

Harder wearing than any of the ones you listed and with the possible exception of the Open Corsa, just as good performance.

How many training miles are you going to put in a week?

Around 150-200 a week, depending on schedule.

Any issues with the sidewalls? I have heard a couple reviews saying that they puncher fairly easy.

Vittoria Open Pave EVO CG (more durable than the Open Corsa)

I ride Vittoria Open Corsa EVO CX for everyday riding on one of my bikes but it really is a waste because they don't last that long (start really getting cut up after 2K miles; edit: I weigh 145-150 lbs). They are awesome tires though...

I like the Continental 4000s

Also consider Schwalbe Ultremo. Supposedly extremely low rolling resistance.

The Conti Attack/Force has been doing very well on mine. The only thing is that you can't rotate them.

I read lots of threads about pro3 race's cutting. But I went ahead and bought them.. Now I've got about 200 miles on them and maybe .5 mile on a packed gravel road with zero cuts.. the tires seem fine to me. They have great grip.. I really am liking them so far.

I use P3Rs as my regular tires and I don't even race. I just like the handling with them. I ride dirt and gravel too and have no issues.

I am a GP4000s and a Pro3 user and like them both just fine. I ordered a pair of Vittoria Open Corsa Evo CXII and they should be in tomorrow. They are the 320tpi version. I am planning on using them on a Century+ Saturday. Ill let you know how they compare.

They will be ridiculously awesome. Trust me, once you try them, you can't go back...

Took my first "real" ride on mine today. Time will tell re: hard-wearing, but the ride is exceptional. They'll take high PSI, 170 or something. I'm running my rear tire at 130 and it's smooth over roads that beat me down on other tires.

"The Ride" of the Waterford frame and fork may have as much to do with the ride quality as the tires. Together with the Tricomps, it doesn't suck.
