Selecting a group

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Selecting a group

I would like to find a group in Chicago. I'm a 3 season rider. I'll ride 350 to 550 miles/month and can average 18-21 mph over 40 miles when riding alone, this data includes slowing/stopping for lights every mile or so.

The idea of traveling at 25 to 40 mph in a highly competitive group doesn't appeal to me, is there an alternative?

What kind of group should I look for?

Michael

there are groups that are much more casual and just like riding around. check the regional sections for people in your area.

Got to your LBS and ask about local group rides, whether they have one out of the shop.

Where are you in Chicago? If you're on the north side (or Evanston thru Highland Park), there are quite a few groups ranging from informal to clubs. Several groups use Plaza del Lago in Wilmette as a starting point.

I'm on the far north side, California and Peterson. I've been riding along the Northshore, I also use the Northbranch, Channel, and Lake-front bike paths at off-peak times.

I have checked with all the LBS' and only one has a riding group but Try as i might i can never seem to meet up with them, they say they are going one way so i wait for them along the way, and then I wait and they never show, and when i go and question they say they went a different way.
