Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It's possible, but I dunno that asking for cash makes it more likely to be stolen. It's CL, what are your other options? I wouldn't take a check from some random person. Money order I guess? That's a pain.

Good deal? Not really.

Stolen? Doubtful. No reason to suspect that. Cash on CL is the norm.

Seller has original receipts. Not stolen, unless he's very good at stealing.

Would you take a $1200 check from a CLer? I think crying "stolen" because the seller wants cash is pretty ridiculous...

Doubt there's anything fishy about that ad. BikesDirect sells a new one with components not that much different for $300 more.

I go with cashier's checks -- they're as good as cash for the seller, and the buyer has the additional security of knowing the seller's actual identity.

Not really. I just sold my hybrid via CL this weekend. After the first three respondents were the old "cashier's check + 3rd party shipper" scam, I specified cash only. Too many "cashier's checks" are fraudulent these days. Maybe if it was drawn off a local bank, and the transaction took place during business hours so I could call said bank and verify the check, I'd be willing to give it a go. But otherwise, green is the only thing I'd consider.

I work in Stuart and live just a bit north of there. It is, overall, an affluent area. One of the top 2-3 counties in the state for avg income, maybe 1st or 2nd. It's quite possible someone decided to try out triathlons decided they didn't like it and are now spending their money on skiing or something.

I can't really comment on the price but I too doubt it's stolen.

Err, having sold thousands of dollars worth of (non-stolen) stuff on CL, I only accept cash as a seller.

The BD one is probably a rebadged generic frame.

What? They can't just take a frame and paint it to look like a different brand and sell it. It's a legit bike from BD. The same company that owns Fuji now owns Kestrel, so I think that is the link.

Is your flame suit on?

That's exactly what they did with the Motobecane name...The fact that the same company that owns Fuji now owns Kestrel is even more of a testament to it being a generic Taiwanese frame. In the posting it says this Kestrel is an American made frame...so how is buying the rights to Kestrel's name and slapping it on whatever bikes they want legit?

Sure looks like the same bike (Talon SL) as what is in the ad. Pulled straight from BD website. All flaming aside, they have been selling Kestrels for a number of months now, and some may have been left over stock from the Cali factory (or they may still be producing there, I don't know). Wheels are different, as are the brakes, crank and the bar setup.

Thats exactly what they do. I don't know why people have such a problem with BD bikes themselves. Their marketing and claims on their websites are shady, but the bikes are for the most part solid if you know how to put a bike together properly.
