Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Mix and Match Shimano Components

Hi all -

I have a Raleigh road bike, with an SRAM Truvativ Isoflow Road crank, Shimano Ultegra derailleur, and Shimano Sora shifters on the front (bought it used...). A bike mechanic told me the Ultegra-Sora combination is bad for the gears and is putting undue pressure on them.

Do I need to upgrade the Sora because of that, or worry about the crank for that matter?

Thanks!

I is starting to amaze me the kind of total BS mechanics are willing to tell customers.

Sounds like the mechanic was putting undue pressure on your wallet. Of course, you might have a nicer shifting experience, but that's a different story.

No other issues to worry about with that combination? Would it be worth the upgrade for other reasons (I'm not concerned about weight...)?

Sorry - not too knowledgeable in terms of component levels. Thanks!

It will function 100% fine. If you want to upgrade the shifters (because sora works differently then all the other shimano stuff) you can but then you would need shifters and a cassette and chain i think since sora is less speeds then tiagra and up.

my take on component levels is "ignorance is bliss".

friction shifters work great, until you ride indexed...

dt shifters work fine, until you try brifters...

sora shifts perfectly, until you put your hands on ultegra....

there's always something better out there, if you arent having problems with your set-up, i say stick with it.

That's been pretty much my personal experience.

I held out a looooong time before getting my first index shifting bike. Hey, I'm a retro grouch, what could possibly be the big deal? I remember on my first ride thinking "What have I been missing? This is great!" The same exact thing happened when I got my first bike with STI shifters.

New Ultegra shifters will probably give you "crisper" shifting but, since what you have is working, how can anybody say the parts are incompatable?

I still remember getting my first set of clipless pedals and falling in love with them almost instantly. It was a huge improvement and to my mind still the single most wonderful upgrade I've ever experienced in my bicycling history. I got back into road biking about two years ago and bought a new Masi that came with 105 shifters (and an Ultegra derailleur) and they're definitely very, very nice to have and work quite well (but weren't as revolutionary a jump as the pedals for my personal riding experience). I've never ridden a Sora or Tiagra equipped bike so I can't make a direct comparison. But I would tend to agree with the others who say if it's not giving you problems then I would let it ride (no pun intended). If you find the quality of your shifts suffering as time goes on, or you learn that you're not getting the performance level from them that you've "grown" into, then consider an upgrade.
