Suck it up and buy a cheap set of Wellgo platform pedals. Wear whatever shoes you've got.

yeah if it's just a morning ride, get some platform pedals. Leave them in the car for the next time you forget your shoes.

How hard a ride is it? Wouldn't want to do it for an all-effort ride, but for an easy-paced 50 miler or less it's not that bad to just use your regular shoes on most clip-in pedals. I've done it with SPDs a couple times and it worked fine - just had to remember not to pull up.

a local bike store opens at noon so I could try see what I can get there and try for an afternoon ride... though I was planning on heading home early afternoon... see if the wife will be cool with it...

I forgot my bike shoes once and just rode with my LOOK pedals flipped over (where it's flatter) in my regular tennis shoes. It was a recreational/sightseeing type ride so it wasn't super high speed or hard core but it worked out surprisingly well. After awhile, I didn't even think about it any more and had a great time. (It was an impromptu tour of New Orleans when I stopped in on my way across country.)
