Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Good Ride Near Kansas City

I'm in Kansas City for a few days with my bike. I'd like to drive out of town (30 miles or so), then ride on some smooth roads that don't have much traffic. I'll be riding with my daughter and wife, and a forty mile trip would be good.

Any suggestions for an area to go to?

Thanks!

P.S. A blog of our trip: https://carbiketrip.blogspot.com/

Drive to Kearney...stop and see Jesse James' grave in the cemetery there (optional)

Get back in the car and drive all of the way to Gallatin, MO (on Highway 69, east of the I-35 junction).

Ride your bikes round trip from Gallatin to Jamesport. See one of the two remain squirrel-cage jails in America (Gallatin) and a wonderful Amish community (Jamesport).

It's a day trip but well worth while and far off the beaten path for cyclists.

Drive to Lawrence, Kansas.

Take this loop.

When you get to the Southwest corner of this loop (the road over the dam at Clinton Reservoir, follow the blacktop out to Lone Star lake. Have a picnic at Lonestar, head back to Lawrence.
