Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Weekend Rides - May 16th-18th

It's a long weekend this weekend! Is anyone planning a tour or other extended ride(s)?

I was planning to do the Golden Triangle tour, but changed my mind and will hopefully be doing a couple long-ish day rides with my father instead.

Probably will not ride this weekend. My daughter totaled my wife's Stratus last night. No one hurt, but lots of things need taken care of.

It's just starting to turn green here ... teensy little leaves on the trees and a faint greenish hue to things. I'm hoping to get some photos that actually show signs of spring this weekend!!

Apparently it's supposed to snow again on Monday, but Saturday and Sunday don't look too bad.

I believe that it's going to be raining in the mid-Atlantic region this weekend. If not, then I might do a 100+ mile ride on Sunday, if I get up early enough and my groin doesn't hurt as much.

Tomorrow's forecast: High of 66, winds from the northwest at 20mph.
Sunday's forecast: High of 69, winds from the northeast at 10mph.
Good riding temps, but I hate the wind. I'll decide tomorrow.

Is that the Montauk Century you're planning on riding? I wish I could but there's a communion ceremony I have to go to on Sunday.

Oh, got plans, to see if they work is the thing. Planning to ride up to Richardson, 14 miles. Then ride the Richardson Wild Ride, metric century. Then ride home. But...I've been sick earlier in the week, and still feeling old & fat & tired from it, and forecast earlier today was 60% chance of rain tomorrow. So we shall see.

After 8 hours of work with no lunch (at the end of a long week of the same) etc, it was completely sweet to grab a snack at home, situate the kids, and hit the road for a couple of hours. Beautiful warm weather for a cruise on the road bike. I swapped the bar out for a compact 44 cm Easton ea50 last week and spent awhile dialing it in this evening.

With luck, there will be enough free time to get a century in this weekend, split between days...

While not technically the weekend, I had a great 43 mile lunchtime ride yesterday. My boss knows I like to ride, lots, so she told me to take a long lunch and enjoy the weather
Getting kitted up for a 3 hour group ride out of the LBS this morning. Hopefully they'll go easy, I'm still hurting from yesterday's ride.
Tomorrow never knows....

LBS group ride this morning - 64 miles, 3:20, 19mph average. Nice and easy, everyone played nice, just what I needed after yesterday's ride. The 2nd best part of the ride was towards the end of the ride getting a 4 man rotating paceline going on a good 4 mile stretch of mostly level road, we were flying
Without question the best part was stopping for coffee and a muffin at my favorite cafe.

Wife took the daughter to Girls On The Run...

Her first 5K run at age 8...

You go girl...

I took my son to baseball practice...

I thought I would do a quick hillclimb 4,10,5 LT interval set with a 20 min ME...

During the first interval, went to grab a water bottle but the cages were empty...

Left 'em in the fridge...

Had to ride to the store and cut out one interval...

Still a beautiful day....

Well, I rode the Richardson Wild Ride, did the metric century, and did it in the rain. I chickened out on riding to the ride, and just drove up there. Leaving a nice dry house to ride off into the rain sounded stupid, but riding off into the rain with a 100 other people made it seem a perfectly reasonable thing to do.

Friday: Nothing!
Saturday: quick 20 mile ride. Not in the mood for much else. Tried the new D2 custom shoes and they don't fit right. Pissed.
Sunday: We'll see. Maybe will do 65 miles. Not sure. It depends what mood I am in when I get up. This is the time of the year when the heat starts to crank up very early in the AM, so the mileage starts to decrease some for a few months.

Saturday - my father and I got in an 87 km ride in the mountains. It was a nice day as far as temperature goes, but was quite windy on the way out to Saskatchewan River Crossing ... it took us 3.5 hours to cover the 43.5 km!! The way back should have been really fast, but we were almost too tired to take full advantage of the tailwind. Still we did the 43.5 km back in 2.5 hours.

There was some wildlife out there ... deer - both mule deer and white tailed deer, mountain sheep, ravens, crows, and some sort of little yellow bird. The trees haven't leafed yet for some reason ... they're late this year. And there was lots of fresh snow on the mountain tops.
